Scary situation Saturday night when one of the buildings at the Granada Apartment complex off Peach St. caught fire. Luckily, everyone got out alive. If you live there, I’d be scared to hear about the flaws in the design of the fire hydrant system in that complex.

I'm really curious to see what happens with Granada after this. I had friends that lived there years ago, and it wasn't hard to see that it was shoddily constructed throughout. It's kind of an unspoken acknowledgement throughout Erie that it's poorly maintained. Hell, there was shag carpet on the walls of one of the complexes, I'm sure that stuff would burn easily. I also heard that one of the building's fire alarms was found to not work during this fire – perhaps a full inspection of these apartments is in order? I'm sure the residents would like not having another tragedy like this occur.
I have a cousin that lives in the Granada apartments and I remember that she lived in a basement apartment that the hallways wreaked of mold and mildew and had shag carpeting with no pad under it. The present apartment is not much better
I fear for her and all the other tenants that live there. Is this the best we can do for people with lower incomes?
“We” have little to do with the people who live in Granada. It is not a project. It is not publicly subsidized housing. People who live there choose to do so. They pay their own rent, bills, etc. If there is a problem with a building it is up to the tenant to notify the landlord. If the landlord is unresponsive, then there are various government agencies that can step in and take action to force repair of said issue. This fire is a tragedy and could've been easily avoided by a few people speaking out and not waiting for someone to take care of them. Perhaps we could all take a lesson from this and be a bit more observant of our surroundings for the benefit of others instead of just waiting for it to be done for us?
