Governor Edward G. Rendell today asked the U.S. Small Business Administration to declare Erie County a disaster area following a fire in Millcreek Township on March 28 that destroyed a 35-unit building at Granada Apartments. At Governor Rendell’s request, SBA officials, along with local and county officials, and representatives of the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency, conducted a damage assessment at the apartment building. The Governor used the results of this assessment to request assistance from the SBA to make low-interest, long-term loans available to qualifying individuals, homeowners, renters, businesses and non-profit organizations that have been impacted by the disaster.
Michael Joyce’s wife wants her house back. The government says the house was purchased with funds Joyce received illegally, though Mrs. Joyce claims she is legally on the deed and the property was paid for using marital assets.

Dr. Randy S. Clemons has been named dean of the School of Social Sciences at Mercyhurst College, replacing Dr. Peter Benekos, according to an announcement today by the Office of Academic Affairs. The School of Social Sciences offers undergraduate degrees in Criminal Justice, History, Intelligence Studies, Political Science, Social Work, and Sociology and master’s degrees in Applied Intelligence and Administration of Justice.
