Erie PA News, Events and Sports for Thursday, April 9, 2009

We’re confused. On Monday, we got a press release talking about the opening of Erie County Recycling Convenience Center set to open on April 11. Yesterday, we put the info in our daily news post. The release basically said this:

The Erie County Recycling Program (ECRP) will open the first centralized collection site “Convenience Center” in North Western PA on April 11, 2009. The Center will accept Electronics (e-waste) and Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) free of charge from Erie County residents from 9am to 3pm on the 2nd & 4th Saturday of each month from April thru October in 2009. The Convenience Center is located at 1556 West 12th St., Erie (just off Greengarden between the Bayfront & 12th).

Seems pretty straight forward. Then, reader Ron left a comment saying this:

I just called to register for the Erie County Recycling Program and was told it was cancelled due to lack of interest. WTF? Today was the first time I’ve ever heard about it (On ErieBlogs) – Maybe they should have advertised it more.

Perhaps someone with the City of Erie could help here. Is the Recycling Center opening on April 11 or not?

Lots of great comments on yesterday’s post about County Executive Mark Divecchio and Buzz Andrezewski. Quick poll:

Governor Edward G. Rendell today announced that the U.S. Small Business Administration approved his request for assistance for residents of Millcreek Township who were affected by the fire at Granada Apartments on March 28. Those who lived in the fire-ravaged apartment units may now apply for low-interest disaster loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration. The loans will help pay to replace personal possessions lost in the fire.

Ciearra Johnson has been sentenced to 3 years and 2 months in prison. Johnson was the mother of Tah-Mere Talmadge. Damere Talmadge was convicted of killing the child. Johnson did not participate in the murder but did not get the child care. Sad story.

The Erie Regional Chamber and Growth Partnership (ERCGP) has announced Dr. John D. “Jack” Burke, chancellor of Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, as the 2009 Louis J. Tullio Community Service Award recipient. Burke, who first joined the college in 1981 and has led Penn State Behrend since 2001, will be honored during the ERCGP’s Celebration of Excellence dinner and awards ceremony on April 16 at the Bayfront Convention Center.

Sports

The Erie Seawolves opened their season last night at the Uht and beat the Altoona Curve 8-7 before 3,573 fans. Ryan Stieby hit 2 home runs for the Wolves. Here’s some video from the game:

Joe Kimball has been named the athletic director at Mercyhurst College. Kimball is currently the principal of Strong Vincent High School. He was previously head coach of the Mercyhurst football team.

Former Erie Otters members Derrick Bagshaw and Josh Vatri were recently recognized as major award winners at the 3rd Annual UOIT Ridgebacks Awards Banquet held in Oshawa, Ontario. Derrick Bagshaw, a second-year Bachelor of Commerce student, was named the UOIT Male Athlete-of-the-Year while freshman Josh Vatri was named the Freshman Athlete-of-the-Year.

I'm sorry – If you are in public office – I believe you should go out of your way to make things look and more importantly be appropriate.

Mark Divecchio's name just keeps coming up with big question marks after it – every time he has someone do something for him. I am sorry, that is enough for me to say, wait I think there is something fishy here and I am not voting for him.

    Why is he still around?
