Edinboro News for the week of April 10th -17th

Hey everyone, Yourboro here. Nothing too exciting is going on around Edinboro. The Commuter parking lot across from the campus police station is torn up, and progressing fast, while things like Heather Hall and the Fighting Scots statue continue to sit at a stand still in demolition, and completely unbuilt.

SGA Elections

I suppose the biggest news of the week is the SGA elections. Students in Edinboro could vote for a new SGA president until 4:00 PM today at the Pogue Student Center. Here is a post from Yourboro earlier this week that I think sums up some of the crucial information someone would need to know about the current SGA leader, and how SGA has become the most corrupt organization on campus, while in reality it should be the most trustworthy.

Zelechowski’s first clash with the student body came last year around this time, when she was up for re-election against congress member Adam Sullivan. This infamous election ended with Sullivan the declared winner – but things went haywire after that.

“The week of the election on April 14, there was a resolution passed to allow Sullivan to run for SGA president. At the April 21 SGA meeting, after the election where Sullivan was voted as the winner with a 304 to 177 popular vote margin, he was again voted ineligible because it went against the SGA constitution,” according to a Spectator article last May.

In Fall 2008, Zelechowski created the House of Representatives – 200 people to represent each of the university’s clubs. She did this because nobody wanted to be on congress. Everyone hates it, it’s a joke, and it will hopefully be abolished very soon.

Now Zelechowski’s undeserved position will be filled by either long-time Zelechowski cronie Glenys Jarrett-Coker or Executive board office manager Jamie Lutz. Jarrett-Coker has been known to send out  e-mails to student organizations with the Caps Lock on and threaten their funding if they don’t perform arbitrary, menial tasks. I know next to nothing about Lutz, and in this case that is a great thing. They each have Facebook campaign group pages outlining their goals:

Glenys Jarrett-Coker:

- To improve the relationship with Student Government and the student body
- Address student concerns
- Improve Student Government’s Image
- Create a SGA scholarship for students

and now Jamie Lutz:

• Revision or abolishment of the House of Representatives
• Hold a Constitutional Review Day / Convention to update our constitution
• Run meetings more effectively by using a speakers list during discussion
• Create a student concerns wall
• Have a fun and informative orientation for new members
• Adopt a philanthropy for SGA to support
• Hold fundraisers to fund a Congress retreat

I chose the candidate who actually claims to want to do SOMETHING, not just vague stereotypes of what an SGA president is supposed to do. I suggest y’all do the same. Let’s hope this election isn’t rigged.

The students at Edinboro can only hope for a better leader, one who is actually voted in.

Currently a lot of the money students are paying goes to useless clubs like “C.O.R.E”, a club where a bunch of goofballs go skiing and rock climbing. Pft, alright, whatever. I can’t believe a group like C.O.R.E gets any money, while some groups (almost any artistic group on this campus) barely get any funding what so ever.

Hang out with President Brown this Friday

Attention Students – Meet with the President: Do you have a question, comment or concern you would like to share with the President? If so, please join him during one of the upcoming President’s Hours – a time the President has set aside to meet with you. All meetings are held from 3:00 - 4:00 p.m. in the President’s Dining Suite, Van Houten Dining Hall. The remainder of the spring schedule is as follows: Fridays - April 17. Reservations are not necessary. For additional information, contact Coleen Peckham at peckham@edinboro.edu or 732-1739.

Other than that? Nothing else is really going on, but I’ll be sure to let you know was soon as something is!

Have a good week! :)
