Show of hands – who’s having leftover ham for breakfast, lunch and/or dinner? We hope you had a nice Easter.

Two people were killed in auto accidents this weekend. In one accident, a car lost control on Buffalo Road and crashed into a house. No one in the house was injured, but the driver, Dennis Beard, lost his life.

We’ve blogged before about the potential closing of Erie’s Shriners Hospital. There’s been a good amount of people who have decried the closing and are trying to stop our facility from being closed, but consider this quote from Shriners CEO Ralph Semb. He told the AP:

“Unless we do something, the clock is ticking and within five to seven years we’ll probably be out of the hospital business and not have any hospitals.”

Norma J. Gloss, grandmother of one of Ralph Bucky Phillips’ children, has been given the OK to sue New York State Police. She says she was falsely arrested and illegally held during the hunt for Phillips.

The Erie Yacht Club will host an evening reception and charity regatta on August 9 to support to the Brig Niagara. Pull Together Erie: A benefit for the Flagship Niagara will commence at 6:00 p.m. in the Clubhouse of the Erie Yacht Club. The evening will include a cash bar with Hor d’ouerves, a silent auction of Flagship Niagara artwork, and a keynote address from the noted maritime historian and Senior Captain of the Flagship Niagara, Walter Rybka. Local politicians and area business leaders are expected to be on hand. The evening will conclude around 8:30. According to the Event Chair, Douglas Boldt, “The evening will be a time where the entire Erie community can come out and show their support for their tall ship and local icon”. A suggested donation of $10 per person is strongly encouraged by the organizers.

Sports

images-1.jpgDon’t look now, but the Seawolves are 4-0 on the season after sweeping 4 games from the Altoona Curve, the last win being a 2-1 win on Satuday. The Wolves host Bowie today through Wednesday. Game times are 6:35 p.m.

The top seeded Southwest Division champion Colorado 14ers selected the Erie BayHawks as their opponent in the first round of the 2009 NBA Development League playoffs, it was announced today following a teleconference held with the League’s eight playoff-bound teams. For the first time, the three division champions, along with the wild card team with the best regular season record, had the opportunity to select their first round opponent among the four lowest seeded playoff teams.

Canada only needed one dominant period to set the tone Thursday at the world under-18 hockey championship.

Bryan Froese of the WHL’s Everett Silvertips scored three goals, two of those coming in a seven-goal second period that propelled the defending-champion Canadians to a tournament-opening 11-2 rout of Germany. Team Canada captain and Erie Otters forward Ryan O’Reilly collected an assist in the victory.

The Shriners predicament wonders if the entirely non-Shriners board that runs the hospitals is recieving their salaries. I just can't figure out why someone who isn't a Shriner, isn't even a Mason, is heading up the board. Makes no sense. Why not a Shriners Memorial Day Telethon?
