Gannon President Antoine M. Garibaldi, Ph.D., will confer some 815 degrees during the University’s Spring Commencement ceremony, to be held Saturday, May 9.
The ceremony will begin at 2 p.m. at Tullio Arena, 809 French St (map).
The graduates include 45 doctor of physical therapy degree recipients and three doctoral degree recipients. In addition, 329 students will be awarded master’s degrees, 411 bachelor’s degrees, and 27 associate’s degrees.
Of the class, 49 will graduate summa cum laude, 79 magna cum laude, 81 cum laude, and seven with academic honors.
The ceremony’s keynote speaker will be Suzanne Malveaux, a White House correspondent for CNN and primary substitute anchor for “The Situation Room,” hosted by Wolf Blitzer. Malveaux will be awarded an honorary doctor of humane letters degree during the ceremony.
Malveaux earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology from Harvard University in 1989 and a master’s degree in journalism from Columbia University in 1991.
Based in the Washington, D.C., bureau, Malveaux joined the CNN network in May, 2002. As White House correspondent, she extensively covered the 2008 Presidential election and served as a panelist questioning the candidates in the Democratic presidential primary debate sponsored by CNN and the Congressional Black Caucus Institute. Malveaux also contributed to CNN’s coverage of the 2000 and 2004 elections and its Emmy-winning 2006 election coverage. She has interviewed former presidents George W. Bush, George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton, as well as former first lady Laura Bush. She has served as a member of the press corps on presidential trips to Europe, the Balkans, Southeast Asia, Africa, Australia, Latin America, and the Middle East.
Before joining CNN, Malveaux was a correspondent for NBC News based in both Chicago and Washington, D.C., and covered major stories such as the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in Pennsylvania and at the Pentagon, and the Kosovo and Afghanistan wars from the Pentagon. Prior to working at the network level, she was a general assignment reporter for WRC-TV in Washington, D.C., and for FXT-TV and New England Cable News in Boston. She produced documentaries in Egypt and Kenya and contributed to the production of a one-hour documentary on the Great Depression with Boston-based Blackside Inc. before she became a member of the news media.
In 1996, Malveaux earned an Emmy Award and contributed to New England Cable News’ Associated Press award for “Best Newscast in Boston.” She was part of the coverage teams that earned CNN a George Foster Peabody award for its Hurricane Katrina coverage and an Alfred I. duPont Award for its coverage of the tsunami disaster in Southeast Asia.
Malveaux also was named one of “America’s Most Powerful Players Under 40” by Black Enterprise magazine, Ebony’s “Outstanding Women in Marketing & Communications” and the National Black MBA’s “2004 Communicator of the Year.” She also was selected to participate in Fortune/Aspen Institute’s 2006 Brainstorming Summit.

She is one of the most politically biased “journalists” out there. Bad choice on Gannon's part, in my opinion.
Couldn't agree more. If I were a Gannon graduate, I'd be insulted by the selection of this nonentity as commencement speaker. It debases and trivializes the honorary degree.
I am truly amazed that this most educated man of integrity [Antoine M. Garibaldi, Ph. d, president of Gannon University] has had his head in the sand regarding his church since it was found out [on the internet 2001]about the sexual ,physical and mental abuse of innocent children under the care of the “religious of The Roman Catholic Church[throughout the world ]that he would be more aware of his surroundings. These Crimes Against Humanity that have been committed by the RCC's clergy, etc. since the middle of the 1st century[we now know that] the priests and nuns we know of now, must be delt with “Unmercifully” [as they were with the children] And the people who belong to the RCC must be informed by someone who is truly credible in the media. I'd say a person like Suzanne Malveaux would be the perfect person to reveal these Hideous Crimes in a series of stories . As a graduation speaker, I'm sure she is as delightful in person as she is on CNN. It probably would be very difficult to do but it would be a service to Humanity and her God, to LET THE PEOPLE [in the pews] KNOW, so these crimes will stop..
The talk on all the cable shows is about O'Bama[my Irish view] being in Cairo. There are very few people in these counties, in the middle east, that have the same values as we have in the USA. When you think about how we are about torture[water boarding] not anything like what the mid east tolerates in their daily lives and that we would never tolerate here in America. We are dealing with a culture that takes a young girl's genitils out ,without anesthesia and cuts them away. They allow no rights to women or children . It is a culture of MEN.
People in the USA have freedom. If you will notice, there is no such thing [as freedom]in the Roman Catholic Church. It says [happily] that it is not a democracy. You do not question what is “their law” The LAW OF MEN. We as a people that have fought and died for the Freedoms we all cherish and should not be PUT in the position , as free people, to listen anymore to the antiquated ideas that have been carried down through the ages, form generation after generation to keep us in line by the FEAR that has been infused in us. WE must fight against this evil that has been listened to and believd as right, to say”NO MORE”! We are brighter than that of the mid east MEN who disregard human rights of all peoples and genders. Say NO to the RCC.
I have read that the Diocese of Erie is the most uninformed in the whole world as to what has been happening in the RCC.[since 50 AD til we knew-2001-2009] It has done this on purpose. Freedom of the Press is a “no no” unless the church's laws are put FIRST. Evidently it is a City of people who have been so brain washed by the RCC that no one thinks for themselves. How very sad , here in America, that any organization can put such a FEAR into Free People that they do nothing when their children are sexually abused by the people they hold most dear.[priests & nuns] The parents put the Priest before the truth of their own chid. How very sick is this? We are an informed country, now especially with the WWW and the Internet.
I was in that position many years ago when my young [10 yrs younger] cousin left the Holy Cross Order of Brothers. [of Notre Dame] I wouldn't believe him when he told me why he left….that his superiors were molesting him in the middle of the night when he was just a apostulant [if that is the word.] before becoming a Brother. He was at a home for boys.[I think, Boysville] After he left ,he became an alcoholic, didn't know if he was straight or gay and died young [50]of a broken heart. [The HC superiors groomed their people to believe that St. John was a gay person because Jesus said he Loved him.] That's not how they groom the little people, they do it with money, camping trips, booze etc. Not one person in my cousins family was even told what he went through except me [I was a convert at age 12 & he thought I would understand} Of course I didn't. I was a married woman, with 4 children and couldn't beleive that foolishness, when I was raising my children as Roman Catholics.I am now in my 80th year and we, my husband of 58 yrs and I, have very happily left the RCC. [ in 2001].
I have much more to say about my personal happenings through out this country and my reseaerch but it would take a book.
I've written a children' book but maybe I should take this one on, if no one else will. What America needs, is a well known person of integrity ,to do a series on one of the respected networks, cable or where ever people will read or listen to, on “The Crimes against Humanity done in the name of God.” [Does this ring a bell? read history of RCC. , nothing new]
