Chytoria Graham, appealing her conviction, has been granted $20,000 bail by Judge William Cunningham. Graham was convicted of using her infant child as a baseball bat and attacking her boyfriend. Luckily, the baby recovered from a fractured skull.

Students at Prep will participate in a new sailing program in conjunction with the Flagship Niagara League. The program is expected to bring in much-needed revenue to keep the ship sailing.

We noticed the price of gas jumped up over the last few days. With the price of stamps set to go up next week, it’s a nice 1-2 punch. Forever stamps = psyched.

Garry Seippel, 21, has been charged with several counts of vandalism and mischief after police found him at the scene of a fire set on the playground equipment at Lincoln Elementary School.

Dale Hannah has a good post detailing the delayed-but-finally-here opening of the county’s Household Hazardous Waste Center on W. 12th Street. He blogs:

Daniel M. Shea, Allegheny College political science professor and director of the Center for Political Participation, has been appointed by the Great Lakes Colleges Association as an Endeavor Fellow of the Global Liberal Arts Alliance. A multilateral partnership of liberal arts institutions around the world, the Global Liberal Arts Alliance was designed to strengthen education in the liberal arts and sciences. The Alliance is made possible through the support of the Christian A. Johnson Endeavor Foundation.

The shareholders of Erie Indemnity Company at their annual meeting yesterday re-elected all twelve of the Company’s Directors for a one-year term. Despite a vigorous write-in campaign, we were not voted in, despite have two policies with the company.

Dr. Phillip Belfiore has been named vice president of academic affairs at Mercyhurst College, a role he has filled on an interim basis since the retirement of Dr. Barbara Behan last spring

Gannon University student Kelsey A. Merry of Wesleyville has been named a McGowan Scholar for the 2009-10 academic year. Merry is the daughter of Karen and Ken Merry and is a 2006 graduate of Iroquois High School. She is a junior accounting major at Gannon and has a 4.0 grade point average.

She was chosen as the McGowan Scholar by a three-person committee from the University’s Dahlkemper School of Business Administration and will receive an $18,000 scholarship to apply to her senior year.

Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney PC attorneys succeeded, on behalf of their client Blue Bell developer Peter DePaul in persuading the Pennsylvania Supreme Court to strike down a campaign contribution ban applicable to casino investors as unconstitutional under the Pennsylvania Constitution. The court had never previously addressed the protections afforded to political contributions under the Pennsylvania Constitution, and, in its opinion, confirmed that such contributions are “a form of non-verbal, protected expression.” Further, as urged by the attorneys, the Court concluded that its prior decision in Pap’s A.M. v. City of Erie establishes that restrictions on free expression must be reviewed by the Court under a “strict scrutiny” standard.

An Eriez Trunnion Magnetic Separator has been utilised by Finnish ferrochromium producers, Outokumpu Tornio Works, in their efforts to improve chromite concentrate production in the company’s Kemi Mine.

The Pennsylvania Osteopathic Medical Association recognized LECOM OMS2 John Leuenberger for his clinical writing in the association’s Clinical Essay Competition. Leuenberger received an honorary mention for third place in the competition during an award luncheon at the 101st Annual POMA Clinical Assembly and Scientific Seminar. POMA’s Editor-in-Chief Gerald Scharf, DO announced the winners and presented Leuenberger with a certificate and monetary award.

Welcome to early May baseball. The Seawolves were rained out again last night. Erie SeaWolves outfielder Max Leon has been selected as the Eastern League Player of the Month for the month of April, edging out Portland third baseman Jorge Jimenez for the award.

After Jhonny Peralta’s two-run single capped a four-run rally in the seventh, the Tribe’s bullpen allowed the Jays to tally seven in the bottom half of the frame of Tuesday’s 10-6 loss.
