Erie PA News, Sports and Events for Tuesday, May 26, 2009

We hope you had a nice Memorial Day yesterday. Parades and other remembrances were held across the area yesterday. Thank you, veterans, for your service.

Mercyhurst College announced today that it has been accepted in the Veterans Administration’s “Yellow Ribbon” program, which provides scholarships and other financial aid to military personnel who served our country on active duty since September 11, 2001. The new scholarship, enacted as part of the Montgomery GI Bill, becomes effective fall term 2009 and will be awarded to those eligible veterans enrolled part time or full time at any Mercyhurst campus.

A woman lost control of her vehicle and crashed into the office of local dentist Dr. Jeffrey Benson Sunday morning. We’re sure something was stunned. Floss, maybe.

Ed Palattella of the Erie Times-News has an interesting story about the on-going problems at the Erie County Office of Children and Youth.

We’ve blogged before that several members of the town’s council resigned after things were posted about them on a forum hosted by Topix, and now members of the Wattsburg Erie County Fair board have resigned after posts on the same forum. Erica Irwin writes more about this here.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the Pennsylvania Chamber of Business and Industry toured the state last week to educate local business leaders on the benefits of trade. The tour, which ended in Erie, brought together together Pennsylvania businesses, workers, and trade experts, and highlighted the benefits that international trade brings to the local job market and economy.

Sports

The SeaWolves fell short on Monday afternoon of completing a series win as they were downed by the Akron Aeros, 8-1 at Canal Park.

The Indians fell behind by 10 runs early on due to Fausto Carmona’s control issues, but the bats mounted a thrilling comeback, as Victor Martinez capped a seven-run ninth inning with a two-run single to give Cleveland the walk-off victory over Tampa Bay 11-10.

The Windsor Spitfires of the OHL have won the Memorial Cup. The winners of three junior hockey leagues (OHL, CHL, QMJHL and the host city) compete in the tournament. The Erie Otters particiated in 2002 after winning the OHL title.
