Erie PA News, Sports and Events for Friday, June 5, 2009

I’m heading from Northampton, MA to Erie today. After spending a few days here, I think Erie officials should all pile in Joe Sinnott’s car and head here to see how downtown development is done. A colleague and I parked in a garage for 2 hours today near a row of restaurants and shops and get this — the first hour of parking was free. What a great way to encourage people to shop Main St. It’s a great little town with so many great places to eat all within a few blocks of each other.

Maleno Real Estate will be the builder of the Extreme Makeover Home Edition when they come to Erie in June. The family who will receive a new home will be announced June 25. They’ve launched a website for the project here.

On my way out of town on Wednesday, I saw the news reports of Brad Foulk and his cancer battle. Get well soon, Mr. Foulk.

The trial of Derrick L. Oliver began this week in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Oliver, 29, is facing murder charges for his role in the death of Erie native Lindsey Graygo. She was murdered in February 2008 at her home in Ypsilanti.

We’re finally going to start seeing some hard numbers when it comes to how much the proposed community college is going to cost. WICU reports that a home assessed at $100,000 would pay an additional $30 a year in taxes in year one and $59.62 in year five.

Gamblers fed the slots $41.7 million last week at Presque Isle Downs. They won $38 million back, with $1.9 going to  the state and the casino getting $1.5 million.

Giant Eagle in Yorktown Centre is looking to follow in Wegmans’ footsteps and add beer sales atthe store. Millcreek Township has approved the transfer of a liquor license to the store.

Sports

Altoona beat the Seawolves 4-3 at the Uht last night. Erie starts a four game series in Bowie tonight.

Sparked by rookie Andrew McCutchen, who scored three runs in his debut Thursday, the Pirates batted around twice on the way to an 11-6 win over the Mets at PNC Park.

lived in Mass for 5 years…developement rules are much stricker there…also this town has 3 very affluent college within 5 miles…apples and oranges….Erie people are by FAR much more friendly than the people of MAss

I'm sorry I disagree. People from Erie are not friendly. If you want to see friendly, come to Titusville, Florida. You can actually start a conversation with a total stranger in a grocery store.

People are here because they want to be and between that and the sunshine, it makes a world of difference. People in Erie are plagued with Seasonal Affective Disorder and are grumpy or unhappy because many of them feel trapped.

Erieites see the sun an average of 60 to 80 days a year – we see it everyday.

There is also much more road rage in Erie. Maybe it is because there are more people there than here, but I don't think that is the only reason.

I am sorry, I will come to Erie to visit my friends and family, but I would never live there again. 41 years was enough.

i'm sorry someone thinks people from Erie aren't friendly – hopefully that was just one bad experience – i like to think people could start a conversation with me in a grocery store – i know i have started conversations with others anywhere

  4. inkeupfatboy says:

No, It was not just one bad experience. It was 41 years of living there. I know that there are exceptions to the rule, but I have traveled a bit in the last 5 years and I have found that people are much warmer in most places than Erie. The one exception to this was New Jersey. I would not willingly go back to New Jersey on a bet.

It's nice to see council approached the community college backwards. Wouldn't you do a cost analysis BEFORE you spend money? They've looked at sites, hired consultants, done feasability studies… all now wasted. I can tell you one way that buku bucks could be cut out of this project. Stop trying to develop the Oliver Road area into a metropolis of government funded and built projects. There is a GLUT of developable manufacturing facility in the city that could be done for considerably less cost. Additionally, it's near your population center. Sure it sucks that places like Union City and Edinboro are a trip away, but wouldn't you rather build something close to 100,000 people than, say, 2,000?

  6. TC says:

Now, now SycoPhant quit using that thing called intelligence, and common sense. You know council is lacking in that department.

Like I've said before want a community college great, there has to be plenty of empty buildings that can be used for this.

  7. SycoPhant says:

One can only hope that with DiVecchio on his way out this era of anti-Erie in county council will end too. When Foust ran for Congress and basically said he doesn't care about Erie, that he's more worried about the counties around here shows blatant ignorance to the needs of the people, and it reflects on the feelings of his fellow council members.
