Erie PA News, Sports and Events for Tuesday, June 9, 2009

Derrick Oliver has been found guilty of the rape and murder of Lindsay Graygo. Oliver will be sentenced on July 2 in Michigan. You can read more on this story in the Ann Arbor News.

Erie is mentioned in this CNN story about Shriners Hospitals nationwide that are facing closure.

Four PA members of Congress, including Kathy Dahlkemper, were in Iraq last weekend to visit with troops stationed there, among them the 56th Stryker Brigade.

There will be no Erie Farmers Market this year, which had been going on since 2004. It was cancelled due to lack of interest from local farmers.

Someone has stolen 23 chickens from a coop in Rockdale, Crawford County. We cry fowl – the thief may have been egged on by friends, and you should have seen the thief make off with with his catch, it was poultry in motion.

I feel dirty for having written that last paragraph. I apologize.

Department of Conservation and Natural Resources acting Secretary John Quigley announced today that six state parks across Pennsylvania have been selected to host a day-long series of special events as part of a nationwide Get Outdoors Day celebration on Saturday, June 13. Presque Isle will be participating in this program.

Mercyhurst College has chosen the memoir of Sister Marilyn Lacey, RSM, “This Flowing Toward Me: A Story of God Arriving in Strangers,” as the selection for its annual Mercy Mission Reading Program. The program requires all first-year students to read the book, which reflects on Sister’s 25-year career working with refugees, and encourages others in the college community to read it as well.

Sports

Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals is tonight. Fingers crossed for a Pens win.

The Seawolves were off Monday. They host the Portland Sea Dogs for a three game set at the Uht. Game time for the three game series is 7:05 p.m.

The 2009 Mercyhurst College baseball squad finished its record-breaking campaign ranked in the top 30 of all three major national polls.

Events

The Great American Book sale is going on now at Villa Maria Athletic Center. Hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. through this Friday. Check it out and pick up some great books.
