Erie PA News, Sports and Events for Wednesday, June 10, 2009

I flew out of the Erie International Airport yesterday, and man, we’re lucky to have such a great facility locally. Getting through security always takes less then five minutes and parking is fast and easy.

My friend Penny is participating in the Relay for Life this weekend in Harborcreek. If you have a buck or two to spare, would you support her and her efforts? In addition to walking, she’s part of the team of people organizing the event.

Kevin Flowers of the Erie Times-News has a story about three members of the Regional Assets Funding Committee who have resigned their posts due to Erie County government cutting $500,000 from the pool of funds going to local organizations, despite gaming revenues being up.

Following news this week the farmers market in downtown Erie will not be back this summer, there’s news that a new farmer’s market will open on W. 18th Street in the Little Italy area. Several community groups are working together on the project and the market will be open in the former Flick’s parking lot on Wednesdays from 3 to 6 p.m. through the end of September.

Peter at GlobalErie blogged today that Laura Marinucci, who is leading the Save Our Shriners campaign, was a guest on the syndicated public radio program The Takeaway this morning. Here’s an MP3 of the interview.

Good news if you work or attend class at Edinboro – you are now free to smoke on campus again. An email was sent to the campus community and here’s a quick snippet:

Smoking will be permitted at all other outdoor areas which are more than 15 feet from university building entrances. Receptacles for discarded smoking materials will be placed at appropriate campus locations.

YourBoro has a post on this and the full text of the email.

Sunday June 14th is World Blood Donor Day and there is an international celebration for this event which is just in time for the summer blood shortage season. More than 1 million people worldwide will donate blood this week, and over 300,000 will donate blood this week in the U.S. (about 800 will donate (hopefully!) with the Community Blood Bank). Nexcare has donated 500,000 special bandages for use all across the U.S. for this event. You can donate at the Community Blood Bank on Peach Street.

Prospective students are invited to learn more about Mercyhurst North East at an Open House on Saturday, July 25 from 10 a.m.-noon at the Ridge Building on the MNE campus, 16 West Division St., North East. Talk to program directors, financial aid and admissions staff, take tours of campus, and learn more about MNE’s associate degree programs, including the new occupational therapy assistant, respiratory therapy, and medical lab tech programs. Call (814) 725-6144 or visit northeast.mercyhurst.edu for more information.

Sports

The Pittsburgh Penguins beat the Detroit Red Wings 2-1 to force a deciding Game 7 on Friday night. Let’s go, Pens! I am going to be a wreck Friday night. My poor wife – if she thinks I’m bad during a Steelers Super Bowl, I can only imagine what a Game 7 of the Stanley Cup finals will be like. I’m a pacer, I can’t sit during stressful hockey games.

The Seawolves beat Portland 11-2. The same two teams meet tonight at the Uht. Game time is 7 p.m.

Events

The Gem City Jazz Band will have a free concert on Friday, June 12 in the Colony Plaza from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

The restaurant at the airport is lacking though. The last time we flew out of Erie, we wanted breakfast, and although it was fairly late morning the cook had not shown up yet, so I had to order and choke down a fast food type of breakfast sandwich.

The service was really slow too because the waitress was doing the waitressing and trying to do what cooking she could. So instead of a nice leisurely breakfast, we had to rush to get the plane.

Overall, not a good impression. I remember when the food was actually worth going there to eat even if you weren't flying.

I am failing to understand these people all over who have businesses to try to make money, then do everything to ensure that they won't.

I recently took a trip that included 5 different airports and Erie was the most pleasant. Another plus for it is the free WIFI, which none of the other airports had.
