Erie PA News, Sports and Events for Monday, June 15, 2009

We still haven’t come down yet from Friday’s NHL Stanley Cup Finals Game 7. Everywhere around Erie on Saturday people were talking about it – I even talked with a group of teenagers outside Tops on 38th for 10 minutes about the game. Hockey fans were pumped. There’s a victory parade in Pittsburgh starting at noon today. We assume FSN Pittsburgh will also be carrying the parade if you can’t make the trip.

The Erie County Courthouse will be closed today due to yesterday being Flag Day. State offices are also closed, but banks, city hall and post offices are open.

If tried to drive near Presque Isle Downs yesterday, we hope you had fun sitting in your car. A promotion at the casino led to near gridlock on Route 97 and led to a backup on I-90 as well. Did you go to the casino yesterday? How was traffic in and out?

A Millcreek man was taken to Pittsburgh for treatment after an explosion in his home and subsequent fire. No word yet on what caused the explosion.

Will do me a favor? Will you take a moment and be nice to someone today? It could be a kind word, or letting someone out in traffic, or making a donation to the charity of your choice. Life’s too short to be mean or miserable. Case in point – some d-bag trying to park next to me at Target Saturday laid on his horn because my wife wasn’t moving fast enough getting the doors shut. What was she doing? Buckling our kids in their car seats. This gentlemen needed to honk, then wait for the spot, get out, verbally abuse my wife and leave her with a one-fingered gesture. My initial reaction was that guy should DIAF, but the more I thought about it, I felt sorry for him (and his wife), and not because there were 10 open spaces to park in the lot. What a waste to be so angry all that time that you need to go off on someone putting their kids in a car. Take a deep breath, dude. We live in a beautiful city and just had a beautiful weekend of weather. Go enjoy Presque Isle and take in some nature.

Sports

The SeaWolves, behind a stellar starting pitching performance by Alfredo Figaro, took down the New Hampshire Fisher Cats Sunday at Jerry Uht Park by a final of 7-2.

Cliff Lee took a no-hitter into the eighth, retiring 20 in a row at one point, and the reigning AL Cy Young Award winner settled for a three-hitter in a 3-0 win Sunday over the Cardinals.

The Pirates honored the 1909 World Series team by donning throwback uniforms and tagging the Tigers for six runs in the first four frames, easing to a 6-3 victory on Sunday.

i had the opposite experience out and about yesterday. everyone was so friendly and nice. jonathan in plumbing at home depot rocks! he went above and beyond in helping me fix my burst pipe in my basement.. and everyone else i came across seemed to be in a good mood and enjoying the day. it was almost surreal how happy people seemed.

I went to collect my $2 late last night, we went in at 10:30pm, the promo ended at 11pm.

Was busy, but was able to cruise right up 97, into the lots (upper lot was full) and get in and out without a hubbub.

There was no real line to redeem your ticket at that point.

I pocketed the $2 in cash I “won” and spent an old $3 voucher I had from a slot machine. In and out in about 25 minutes!

Houses explode because of a natural gas problem. Go ask National Fuel.

    I'm bettin.

Also, for every d-bag out there, there are 20 nice people. Sometimes, you don't even know it, which is unfortunate.
