Yesterday, U.S. Congresswoman Kathy Dahlkemper (PA-3), Chairwoman of the House Small Business Subcommittee on Regulations and Healthcare, announced a new interest-free loan program for small businesses created by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). To apply for ARC loans, businesses should visit their local SBA-approved small business lenders. The loans will be available through Sept. 30, 2010, or until appropriated funding runs out. The SeaWolves partnered with the “Save Our Shriners” Hospital of Erie organization on Sunday at Jerry Uht Park and helped to generate the largest single-day fundraising event for this worthy cause. Over $2,300 was raised through ticket redemptions, 50/50, Chinese Auction for autographed items, autographed jersey silent auction, merchandise and donations. Big ups to the Seawolves for doing this fundraiser.

A new report shows that the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine is one of the nation’s leaders in training physicians with Hispanic backgrounds. With 17 Hispanic graduates in 2008, LECOM ranked ninth among all medical schools.
The deputy executive director of the Pennsylvania Board of Probation and Parole, John Tuttle, announced today that five parolees who had gone missing surrendered through the U.S. Marshals’ Fugitive Safe Surrender program — a multi-jurisdictional task force intended to encourage non-violent offenders to surrender voluntarily at a neutral setting, such as a church. The Pennsylvania Board of Probation and Parole aggressively searches for any offender who is not reporting for supervision. The board has four Fugitive Apprehension and Search Team (FAST) Units located in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Harrisburg and Erie.
The Erie Regional Chamber and Growth Partnership has been named a finalist in the 2009 American Chamber of Commerce Executives (ACCE) Chamber of the Year Award, the nation’s only award recognizing the dual role chambers have in creating both leading businesses and communities. Three Gannon University ROTC cadets recently were commissioned as 2nd lieutenants in the United States Army. Two of the cadets, Brian A. Yoder, Jr., of Reading, Pa., and Ryan C. Genard of Mt. Pleasant, Pa., also were honored as Distinguished Military Graduates. The Distinguished Military Graduate (DMG) designation is based on criteria such as high scholarship, high moral character, military aptitude, and leadership ability. A third cadet, Benjamin J. Moore of Saegertown, Pa., was commissioned.

Edinboro University wrestler Paul Donahoe was featured on ESPN’s “Outside the Lines” on Sunday, June 14. ESPN followed Donahoe throughout the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships in St. Louis this March.
Ryan O’Reilly became the most decorated member of the Erie Otters in a single season by capturing six individual awards at the team’s annual Summer Awards Banquet held Sunday at the Sheraton Erie Bayfront Hotel.
