Last week at Presque Isle Downs, gamblers paid the house $47 million. $42.6 million was paid back, leaving $3.8 million after fees. This is up from the same week last year.
Anticipating budget cuts by Governor Rendell as well as lower funds brought in by memberships, WQLN has laid off 15% of its employees. Remaining employees will see pay freezes and be required to take 2 weeks of unpaid leave. The station also announced they will no longer air Marketplace. Rendell was in Erie yesterday lobbying for an increase in the state personal income tax. If you make $50,000, you’d pay $260 more a year. The state faces a budget shortfall of $3.2 billion.

The Erie Otters of the Ontario Hockey League announced today that they have added a game to their 2009 Pre-season Schedule. The Otters will meet the Niagara IceDogs on Sunday, September 6th at 2 p.m. at the Gatorade Garden City Complex. The game will be the back half a two-game set against the IceDogs. The two teams will face one another Saturday, September 5th at 7 p.m. at the Gatorade Garden City Complex.
Mercyhurst College graduate and baseball alumus Jamie Walczak has been selected in the 15th round of the 2009 Major League Draft by the Cincinnati Reds as the 449th overall pick. Joining Walczak among the 2009 draftees is Steve Grife, who completed his junior year of eligibility as a Laker and was selected by the Chicago Cubs in the 26th round with the 800th overall pick.
