Judges of the InnovationErie: Design Competition announced the grand prize winner and finalists, including the people’s choice Best of Show at a press conference on Monday, June 22, 2009 at 1:30 p.m. at the Erie Art Museum Annex Gallery, 423 State Street. The grand prize winner was Ryan Bookhamer who created the Sling-Footwear Carrier. The Sling Footwear Carrier is designed to be durable, lightweight, UV protected, waterproof, and quick drying. The product has been developed to carry, aerate, and protect shoes in an organized fashion. Sling is designed to be easily held in one hand or clipped to a bag.

Erie District Judge Tom Carney will face misdemeanor charges including making threats, assault and disorderly contact. You may remember that Carney flashed a gun at a motorist on I-79.

We’re only three days into summer and we’ve got our first beach advisory. Beaches 1, 2 and Barracks tested positive for high levels of e-coli bacteria. The levels will be be tested daily. Beach 8 and Stone Jetty are closed due to sand replenishment.

MTR Gaming Group says retired Pittsburgh Steeler L.C. Greenwood and another man are quitting its board. MTR said in a regulatory filing Monday that Greenwood and Donald Duffy are resigning July 28.

Businessweek has a story about the railroad boom in China, touching on GE’s place in it. Let’s hope that boom keeps jobs here in Erie.

Michael J. Messina, Ph.D., associate professor, marketing, and director of the Gannon University marketing program, recently delivered a peer-reviewed paper titled “Marketing, Entrepreneurship, Diversity, and Global Business Education,” along with his co-author, Dr. John F. Wellington, dean of Business at Indiana University, Kokomo. The presentation was made at the 2009 Marketing Management Association’s annual conference, held in Chicago. Messina also served as a program chair and currently serves on the Marketing Management Association’s Board of Directors.

U.S. Congresswoman Kathy Dahlkemper (PA-3), Chairwoman of the House Small Business Subcommittee on Regulations and Healthcare, announced during a press conference that she has introduced her second piece of legislation, the IT Tax Credit for Small Businesses Bill (H.R. 2963). She was joined by members of the Technology Council of Northwest Pennsylvania, Rep. Dahlkemper’s Technology Advisory Board, and other IT and small business owners. The IT Tax Credit for Small Business Bill provides up to a $35,000 tax credit to small businesses for technology upgrades, such as the purchase of computer hardware and software.

Fifteen talented Erie area high school students in the Minority College Experience / Women in Science and Engineering (MCE/WISE) program through Penn State Erie, participated in the Bayfront Center for Maritime Studies’ (BCMS) first expedition of the Shipwreck Science Program on June 12, 2009. The students learned not only about some of the shipwrecks in our local waters, but also about navigation, boat handling, history and technology. Using sophisticated scientific equipment including a Side Scan Sonar and an Underwater Remote Operating Vehicle (ROV), the students were introduced to some of the skills and instruments used in today’s underwater exploration technologies.
Using the Bayfront Center’s Side Scan Sonar, which was towed behind the motor vessel Canadian Sailor, the students got a first hand look at modern underwater surveying equipment as they locate not only shipwrecks and their associated artifacts, but also geological formations and underwater debris.

Top Pittsburgh Pirates prospect Pedro Alvarez was promoted to Altoona this past weekend and will be ready to play against the Seawolves tonight at the Uht.

Edinboro University swimmer Max Niggel finished first in the Second BaySwim on Saturday. The sophomore-to-be swam covered the mile across Presque Isle Bay in 17 minutes and 9 seconds to be the first swimmer out of the water.

Gannon University Field’s new face-lift is well into the final phase. The process of replacing the artificial turf at Gannon University Field began earlier this month and the entire project is expected to be completed in the next 7-10 days. It marks the first time the multi-purpose facility has received a face-lift since it opened in 2000.

In preparation for the 2009 National Hockey League Entry Draft being held this Friday and Saturday in Montreal, nhl.com asked Erie Otters forward Ryan O’Reilly five questions.
