A car caught fire in the Walmart parking lot on upper Peach last night. The car was a rental. Hope that dude picked up the optional insurance.

2 children in Erie County have tested positive for the swine flu. This brings the total number of cases in our area to 5.

Ground has finally been broken for the skate park to be located at W. 16 and Poplar. The park has been 4 years in the making.

No need to make a nest any longer, ladies, these new seats do the work for you, automatically covering the seat with a thin plastic sheet. Sorry, dudes, no special seats for you. Probably because of your bad aim.

Donald Ray Cates of Montana has waived his right to a detention hearing. He faces charges he crossed state lines to have sexual contact with a 14 year old girl from Erie he met online. If you remember, they travelled from Erie together and were caught in Arkansas.

Erie Insurance has earned J.D. Power and Associates’ award for “Highest in Customer Satisfaction with the Auto Insurance Shopping Experience.” This award recognizes the top rankings in the J.D. Power and Associates 2009 Insurance Shopping Study(SM), which evaluates the experience of customers purchasing a new auto insurance policy.

Logo Tag.jpgArtsErie has announced that it will receive a $15,470 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to host The Big Read, a program that gives communities the opportunity to come together to read, discuss and celebrate a single book that is one of 30 selections from U.S. and world literature. The grant will be used to promote and conduct community-based reading programs exploring the themes in Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. ArtsErie will host The Big Read locally in partnership with the Erie County Public Library and the School District of the City of Erie.

Sports

The Erie Seawolves beat Altoona 6-2 last night. The same 2 teams play tonight at the Uht at 7:05 p.m.

The Pirates put up four runs off Indians relievers in the ninth inning, including a home run from Adam LaRoche, but fell short of victory in a 5-4 loss on Tuesday night.

Gannon head men’s basketball coach John T. Reilly announced the program’s 2009-10 regular-season schedule on Tuesday. The slate includes 27 games, 14 contests against Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division opponents, and four PSAC cross-over affairs which do not count in the league standings. Former Mercyhurst College baseball standout David Lough will take to the field tonight in the Class A Advanced All-Star Game. Lough, a member of the Wilmington Blue Rocks of the Carolinas League, is the highest draftee for Mercyhurst as he was selected in the 2007 MLB Draft with the 33th overall pick in the 11th round by the Kansas City Royals.
