We hope you had an enjoyable 4th of July weekend. Since I’ve got 2 small kids, we avoided the crowds at Boom on the Bay and hit up Waldameer’s fireworks on Saturday night. We had a great view from the TREC parking lot, but were surprised at the brevity of the show. We still heart you Waldameer – we’ll be dominating the Ravine Flyer II in two weeks.
We got this reply from Twitter about Boom on the Bay:
it was great! and we could see waldameer fireworks as we were leaving! bad crowd and shuttle control though :)
While hearing good reports like that as well as photos like these, the future of the event is in doubt, as Mercyhurst’s agreement with the city to help foot the bill for the fireworks is now complete. The event costs nearly $100,000. Count us in for a hamilton towards next year’s fireworks, especially if someone will take us on their boat to watch them.
Of course, if you didn’t want to trek to Waldameer or the bayfront, you could have caught many of the local um, slightly less legal displays around town. Check out this display:
That’s quite the display. The person who posted that on YouTube had this to say about them:
Every year, the neighbors of West 22 Street between Raspberry Street and Baur Lane chip in and put together this amazing show in the parking lot of what used to be Roosevelt Middle school.
This week, the Shriners National Convention is taking place in San Antonio, Texas, where they will determine what locations they may close this year – with Erie being on that list. We’ll know more on Thursday when an announcement is made, and we’ll let you know here as well as on our Twitter feed what the news is.
Sad news today – David Twomey, 27, of Arlington, VA has passed away due to complications of the H1N1 virus. Twomey was a graduate of Gannon University and worked at WERG while a student. He also worked at St. Vincent.
Berwyn Moore, associate professor, Gannon English department, recently was chosen for a second-place award in The Pinch’s national poetry contest. Her submission, “Pins and Needles,” uses the imagery of pins and needles to explore issues of identity, in particular an identity in the context of illness.
