The Cleveland Plain Dealer reported that travel to Canada is down largely due to the new border restrictions requiring passports as well as the weak U.S. dollar. Instead of traveling to Niagara Falls or Windsor to gamble, U.S. residents are going to casinos in Erie, Buffalo and Detroit.
Erie Indemnity Company will host an audio Webcast to discuss financial results for the second quarter 2009 on Thursday, August 6, 2009, at 10:00 a.m. Eastern Time. The Webcast will be broadcast live via the Investor Relations section of the website.
The Janesville, Wisconsin newspaper reported that Josue Ortiz Andino of Erie was charged with the possession of controlled substance. Janesville, WI is just outside Madison and Milwaukee.
A quick note about something we blogged last week regarding the eWaste recycling. A reader writes in:
The County received a fixed grant amount from the State to conduct the e-waste recycling events two Saturdays a month from May – October. The overwhelming response has booked all of the events for the remainder of the year and the Recycling Program is looking for ways to expand the effort next year. One of them would be to charge to help defer the cost so additional residents can be served.
The Recycling Program wants people to properly dispose of their waste and has created the Convenience Center for individuals to do that. Unfortunately, WJET did not report the story correctly and has caused additional confusion.
The Pittsburgh Steelers began their annual training camp last Friday. The camp is held at Saint Vincent College on Route 30 in Latrobe, Pa. The PG has additional information for you die hard Steelers fans.

The Erie SeaWolves mopped up the Binghamton Mets by a score of 16-3 Friday, and 9-6 on Saturday. The final game of the three-game series was cancelled yesterday due to rain and poor field conditions. The game will not be made up as the season series between the teams is over. The SeaWolves took six of the nine games it played against Binghamton this season.
