June’s unemployment rate was 8.3% for Pennsylvania compared to 9.5% nationally. However Northwestern PA didn’t fare too well with Erie County at 9.6% unemployment and Crawford County at 10.2%. State College had the lowest unemployment rate in all of the state at 5.8%. The White House announced that a number of law enforcement agencies across the U.S. will receive funding. Certain law enforcement agencies in Pennsylvania will receive more than $20 million in federal money. Erie will receive $1.6 million for the hiring of six additional police officers.

The Erie County Department of Health is making a concerted effort to limit the spread of the West Nile virus. If you live in Millcreek, Fairview, or Harborcreek you will probably want to keep your doors and windows closed through Thursday while the Department sprays for mosquitoes, unless of course you enjoy inhaling pesticides.

Erie based Beaumont Technologies Inc. is expanding its services into additional fields of engineering, development and consulting work. It’s good to see an Erie based business doing well despite the current economic conditions.

The Erie Zoo is going to receive a rare Amur Leopard cub that was born at Estonia’s Tallinn zoo last spring. The Erie Zoo will pay the costs to transport the cub to Erie.

The music group Mayday Parade begins it U.S. tour and will be in Erie on August 6th at Forward Hall.
