Erie County’s newest museum welcomes visitors every Sunday beginning September 6, 2009, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. until Christmas (or the snow is too deep!). Admission is free; donations are welcome.
A visit to this unique museum makes a perfect way to spend a Sunday autumn afternoon in the country. Get a jump on next year’s maple sugaring season by seeing the sugaring process in the Tree to Table exhibit. Learn how sugar maples are tapped, sap is gathered, how much sap it takes to make the luscious golden liquid, how it is stored and what products are made from maple syrup.
Watch the sap run and see children take part in the activities throughout the museum. A 30-minute program will be presented at 3:00 p.m. every Sunday. Hurry Hill Maple Farm Museum is located at 11424 Fry Road, Edinboro, Pa.
A fascinating exhibit at Hurry Hill Farm Maple Museum is one featuring Miracles on Maple Hill, the classic book by Virginia Sorensen that won the Newbery Medal in 1957 for the Most Distinguished Contribution to American Literature for Children. The story is set in and around Edinboro.
Visitors will learn about the author, see the Newbery Medal, view photos of the Kreitz Farm which was used as a location in the book, see sketches and artifacts from the book. Find out more about the real hermit in Miracles on Maple Hill and the hooks he carved. The book is still used by teachers in many Pennsylvania classrooms.
In addition, there’s a DVD produced by museum owner Jan Woods that tells the story of Miracles on Maple Hill. Woods has done much original research in the background of the book, locations used by the author and where they can be found today.
Exhibits were designed by Hurry Hill archivist Theresa Gamble, educator Heather Zimmerman and sugarmaker Jan Woods. Maple sugar antiques are on display, and a variety of maple products can be purchased in the museum.
Many area residents have visited Hurry Hill Farm during the Maple Taste & Tour Weekend held in mid-March for the past six years when syrup is being made during the season of mud and snow. Thousands have heard and seen Jan Woods make maple syrup in her rustic sugarhouse outside Edinboro.
The Maple Taste & Tour Weekend is scheduled for Saturday, March 20, 2010,
10:00am to 4pm and Sunday, March 21, 2010, 10:00am to 4pm. Check their Web site for details: http://www.pamaple.org/tour.html
