Blood Bank Needs Help This Holiday Weekend

Officials at the Community Blood Bank are worried about the last big event of the summer for the blood supply. Labor Day Weekend is traditionally one of the three worst weekends of the year; the 4th of July and Memorial Day are the other two. Right now there is a moderate blood shortage but this is expected to steadily worsen when the number of blood donors this week dwindles as the holiday weekend approaches.

This summer was actually above average as far as the blood supply is concerned, but the supply won’t be back to 100% until the high school and college blood drives start up again. 23% of all the blood transfused last year came from students under 23.

“We are in the final stretch!” says Dan Desrochers, Director of Marketing at the Community Blood Bank. “We can end the summer on a positive note with enough donors this week.”

All donors are strongly encouraged to donate at the Community Blood Bank, 2646 Peach Street. Community Blood Bank is open from 9a.m. 6p.m. Monday through Friday and until 7:30pm Tuesday night and Saturday 9a.m.-12:30 p.m.
