We hope you enjoyed your Labor Day Weekend. Even though summer is unofficially over, there is still plenty to do in town. If you have some time this week, you can check out the Waterford Fair, which runs through next Saturday.
We don’t understand all the hubbub about the President of the United States addressing school children today throughout the country. The Millcreek Township School District posted this on their website yesterday:
At noon on Tuesday, September 8, 2009, President Obama will address the nation’s student body. At their discretion, Millcreek Township School District teachers will make this broadcast available to students based on curricular relevance. The broadcast will be carried live on C-SPAN.
Any parent who does not wish their child to view the President’s address should provide a written note to his/her child’s school office and an alternate activity will be made available through the building’s administration.
Want to read the entire speech? It’s here.
A follow-up from an item we posted yesterday. Mark Schwab of Fairview was missing since early last week following a car crash. Sadly, Mr. Schwab was found in Elk Creek near the Gudgeonville Bridge. Sad news, and his family and friends are in our prayers.
Allegheny College invites local social service agencies, non-profit organizations and religious groups to participate in “Imagine Out Loud”—a community involvement fair for Allegheny students—on Friday, Sept. 11 at noon at the Henderson Campus Center. Scheduled on the first National Day of Service and Remembrance, the community involvement fair also marks the fall kick-off of the Community Council, a monthly gathering of area social service agencies. The events are part of Allegheny’s Year of Social Change, an innovative series of activities, workshops and public events aimed at inspiring the campus and community to seek a more just and equitable world.
A grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) will enable Mercyhurst College to further fine-tune its search for pathogens in the recreational waters of Presque Isle State Park, while providing students access to highly sophisticated research equipment and supplementing the work of local health officials.
Sports
The Erie Seawolves season is over after the Wolves dropped 5 straight at the end, including Monday’s 9-3 loss to Akron. They needed a few of those wins to make it in as a wild-card, but alas we’ll have to wait until next season. C. Wolf = bummed.
A late comeback by the No. 10 Mercyhurst College field hockey team fell short as third-ranked Shippensburg handed the Lakers their first loss of the season, a 2-1 setback, on Monday afternoon at Tullio Field.
Events
The Art Galleries of Allegheny College will present “8-Hour Projects,” an exhibit with 12 artists working in the Bowman and Penelec Galleries, beginning Saturday, Sept. 5. The finished projects will be on exhibit beginning Tuesday, Sept. 8 through Tuesday, Sept. 29. Admission is free, and the public is invited to observe and participate.
Dr. Stuart Butler, vice president for Domestic and Economic Policy Studies at The Heritage Foundation, will be the guest speaker at the Manufacturer & Business Association’s Health-Care Forum, starting at noon Tuesday, September 15, at the Association’s Conference Center, 2171 West 38th Street. To register for this briefing, contact Tracy Shepard at 814/833-3200 or 800/815-2660. Cost is $30 for members, $60 for nonmembers.

Is this the first time in a while that parents have had the option of opting out their kids from a presidential address?
I don't recall having that option through my school years of reagan, bush, clinton, and bush jr.
Weird. Just plain weird it seems. Who wouldn't want to hear what the president of our country has to say? Who wouldn't want their kids to hear that..?
I just have to point out when George H.W. Bush spoke to students in October 1991 the same way the Democrats investigated.

The last 6 months have been a study in hypocrisy.
Well the adults who voted for the Obomination are starting to realize the mistake they made – since they are losing the adults – why not ply their brand of BS on impressionable children.
Most if not all of my friends who voted for “The change” are admitting they made a huge error.
