Erie PA News, Sports and Events for Wednesday, September 16, 2009

Obviously the big news of the day is the announcement that GE will lay off over 1,400 hourly and 50 salaray workers, this time permanently. The plant had been having rolling layoffs the last few months. The challenge is trying to find new jobs in a similar field for these workers. There just isn’t that sort of availability locally, and time will tell what the ripple effect will be on our local economy.

If you were affected by yesterday’s layoff announcement, let us know what you’re feeling and your plans for the future. You can use our contact form. You can be anonymous if you like.

Majorie Diehl-Armstrong, set to face trial for her role in the collarbomb death of Brian Wells in 2003, will have a hearing tomorrow to determine if she can fire her public defender. Expect this case to go to trial in 2044.

Current PA Attorney General Tom Corbett (R) has announced he will run for governor in 2010. Corbett handily won re-election last year, and is known for being the driving force in the Bonusgate investigations that have landed several officials in jail.

James Kyson Lee, who plays Ando on the Heroes television program and is on Twitter, was in Erie last night at the screening of the film Fuel, which was screened at the Warner Theatre last evening. The film will be opening across the country over the next few weeks. Hiro Nakamura was not at the screening.

We’re weeks away from the fall election, and things are starting to get moving. Erie County Bar members who were polled recommended retention votes for Judges Elizabeth Kelly and Michael Dunlavey. Also on the ballot this fall is Judge Stephanie Domitrovich. 257 local lawyers voted in the poll. Voters this will will vote yes or no if each judge should be retained and if a judge receive a majority of yes votes, they will be retained.

Cool story from New York, where workers in Norwood uncovered a large lithograph on the side of a building, put there sometime between 1880 and 1917 by the Erie Lithograph Company. A quick look at Google doesn’t have really anything on that company. Anyone have information?

Majorie Diehl-Armstrong – Can someone tell me why we are wasting money on this woman. She is already in jail for the rest of her life. Why are we wasting taxpayer money to try her, when we will never get more out of her than we have already – let's just stop beating this dead horse. God, what a waste of time and energy.
