Lilly Broadcasting will carry the second annual Community for Kanzius Cancer Research Fund Telethon this evening on WSEE, WICU, and the CW. Let’s all do our best to help them top last year’s total of almost $100,000 dollars.
Patricia Fronzaglia, of Warsaw Ave, became the first recipient of the Maleno family-to-Family Fund’s Home Makeover. Mrs Fronzaglia has been disabled since an automobile accident in 1999, and is confined to a wheelchair. The makeover will update her home and make it accessible, so she will again be able to better fend for herself. The renovation is expected to take about a week. Congratulations to this beautiful, courageous, lady for being selected!!!!
A little excitement was created by an unidentified bag left near the County Courthouse Tuesday evening. A call to the Erie Police Bomb Squad and evacuation of the Courthouse and Erie Club next door gave police a safety zone to blow up the bag, which was found to be empty.
Members of the Erie Police Department’s SWAT Team, Bomb Squad, and Motorcycle Unit will travel to Pittsburgh next week to assist officers from all over the state with providing security for the G20 Summit.
Three Erie County Judges are up for retention votes in November, but the Erie County Bar Assn. only rated two of them as acceptable. While Judges Elizabeth Kelly and Michael Dunlavey passed muster, Judge Stephany Dimitrovich was not recommended for retention. However, it’s up to the voters to decide.
Former Governor and Director of Homeland Security Tom Ridge was in town today to sign copies of his new book. Welcome back, Tom.
At least one top hospital administrator in Erie is not in favor of a single-payer or government-run system. Mary Eckert, CEO of Millcreek Community Hospital, instead believes that the reform has to target big insurance companies. However, she also states that giving consumers a government run choice might help lower rates. Ms. Eckert said that charity care comprises about 10 percent of their budget.
Three nontraditional students at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, have been inducted into two honor societies, Alpha Sigma Lambda and Beta Gamma Sigma.
Sascha Asher of Erie has been inducted into Beta Gamma Sigma. He is a senior pursuing a bachelor’s degree in international business and marketing in December. Asher has a 4.0 GPA.
Deborah Chiffon of Erie has been inducted into both Alpha Sigma Lambda and Beta Gamma Sigma. She is a senior studying accounting in December. Chiffon has a 3.95 GPA.
Nancy Loker of Erie has been inducted into Alpha Sigma Lambda. She is a junior majoring in history. Loker has a 4.0 GPA

The Erie Otters of the Ontario Hockey League have announced the details of their home opener party that will take place Saturday, October 3 before the Otters begin their 14th season at Tullio Arena against the London Knights for a 7:00 p.m. start.
The event begins with a free pre-game party at Jerry Uht Park at 5:00 p.m. featuring entertainment by The Geek Army, who were voted Erie’s Best Party Band in the 2007 and 2008 Rock Erie Music Awards.
Tom Ludwig scored three goals and D.J. Egan tallied one to lead the Allegheny men’s soccer team past Saint Vincent, 4-1, on Wednesday.
Three different Golden Knights scored goals as the Gannon men’s soccer team posted a 3-1 victory at regionally-ranked Davis & Elkins Wednesday afternoon.

The Erie Art Museum will exhibit selections from the Edinboro University of Pennsylvania
art collection in its Main Gallery, 411 State Street, Sept, 25, 2009 through Jan. 4, 2010. A free public opening reception will be held during Gallery Night, Friday, Oct. 9, 2009 from 7-10 p.m.
