We received a few emails from people affected by impending GE layoffs, here’s one person’s feelings:
Corporate wife of one laid off. What goes around comes around. For all those under 40 years of age making a good living – traveling all over the world – not being there for special events with your sons, daughters and wife – your day will come when you too are put out to pasture after you have given your best 50-60-70 hrs a week to a company … you best save now. My husband worked for this company 28 years, I moved our family 6 times by myself, restarted my career each time and put it on hold many times to follow him and his career with what use to be a great company in the Jack Welch days and for what????? A five minute meeting on Tuesday saying sorry your job is gone, you’ll get your package in a few days, leave now…… 2 years before he qualified for a full early retirement package. GE does bring good things to life?????
Marjorie Diehl-Armstrong has had her request for a new lawyer approved. A new lawyer will be assigned to her. She said that her old lawyer, Tom Patton, made her “physically ill.”
Joshua Bell of Albion has been sentenced to 5 1/2 – 14 years in prison for his role in the arson that destroyed the Gudgeonville Bridge last November. Bell is 24.
We’re not really comic fans per se, but it’s cool that MODOK: Reign Delay #1, published this week, has its hero sent to work in lovely Erie, PA. Artist and writer Ryan Dunlavey is from Erie. Marvel Comics, who are publishing the series, describe it this way:
Down on his luck, MODOK moves back into his parent’s house in Erie, Pennsylvania and discovers that his family, old classmates and apathetic locals can thwart his plans for world conquest better than any super hero. Featuring obligatory guest appearances by Norman Osborn and some Canadian mutant super hero you’ve probably never heard of.
Here’s a quick video with Ryan talking about the comic:
Lifestar, the medical helicopter serving our area, may be moving its base of operations from Harborcreek to Corry. The move would allow Lifestar to have a more central presence in its service area.
More possible H1N1 flu cases at Behrend – the number may now be at 7 students. All seven students have opted to return home to recover, following recommended self-isolation guidelines.
Has anyone received the email going around about attacks and muggings happening at the Millcreek Mall? If so, send it to us so we can post it.

Anticipating substantial fee increases in electricity, coupled with the fluctuation of natural gas prices, the Manufacturer & Business Association (MBA) is now offering its members a low-cost alternative energy solution. The Association has established the Employers’ Energy Alliance of Pennsylvania, Inc. (EEA-PA), which will act as an energy supplier for its more than 4,700 member companies and organizations operating throughout central and northwest Pennsylvania. By purchasing directly from the electric grid and gas pipeline and eliminating broker commissions and marketing costs, the EEA-PA is able to pass savings directly on to participating members.

“…2 years before he qualified for a full early retirement package.”
This is the norm for GE. I wish someone would research the cases against GE for terminating people right before their retirement. Most people do not fight it because it is a battle against all of GE. And the people who battle them get involved in cases that last years.
I am confused by the venom being spewed at younger generations in this comment. They did not create this recession, and if anyone perfected the art of not being around for their children, it was the baby boomers who created an entire generation of “latchkey” kids.
Furthermore, notice that the vast majority of people in power — politically and institutionally — are baby boomers and older.
These layoffs suck for EVERYONE; they affect not only individuals but the ENTIRE COMMUNITY.
Target your anger appropriately, please.
I completely agree with Christine. I'm also laid off, after 10 years with the same company. I feel bad for those from GE who got laid off, but I have to admit, my first thought when I heard about it was, “Damn, more competition for what few jobs are out there.”
I dont know much about comics- but MODOK was always terrifying to me.
It's a goddamn giant face.
