Finally someone is going to put to use the constant wind that comes across Lake Erie. Ontario Hydro is planning to erect more than 800 wind turbines in the lake. That’s enough to provide power for two million homes. Sounds a lot better than some other power generation ideas that are floating around. Now if only the decision-makers in our corner of the world would see the advantage to wind power.
A map showing the proposed high speed rail corridors that hopefully will be built across the country, somehow leaves Erie out in the cold. The proposed routes stop at Buffalo, Cleveland, and Pittsburgh. I understand that Pennsylvania hasn’t even applied for any of the Stimulous funds being offered for the project by the federal government. If you are interested in seeing this project include Erie, Brian Pitzer, of All Aboard Erie, has announced a rally to be held at Union Station, on October 13, at 5pm.

The grape harvest is underway, somewhat belatedly. The grapes were slow to ripen this year due to the cool, wet, growing season. A few warm, sunny, days would go a long way toward increasing the sugar content. That would make the growers more content, also, since higher sugar content means higher sales!!!

The Niagara crew will spend the next few weeks preparing the ship for winter. The rigging and masts have to be taken down, and a protective cover wrapped around the ship. I bet it gets pretty cold up in the crow’s nest, with the cold Lake Erie wind howling around.
Community leaders from government, education, business, and non-profits did a little roll-playing to help them understand what it is like to live the life of poverty experienced by more than 20 % of our Erie neighbors. Why don’t they just ask? I’m sure they could get a lot better idea from someone who lives the poverty day in and day out.
Mike mentioned here yesterday that Erie has the highest poverty level of any urban area in Pennsylvania. We think that is totally unacceptable. Any comment, Mr. Mayor??
The weather this week makes us realize that Autumn is here and s**w is just around the corner. It would be easier to face if we had actually had some Summer weather.

The Erie Playhouse kicked off it’s season in grand style, selling out the house for every performance of ‘Chicago’. The rest of the season looks exciting for theater-goers as well. Next on-stage, at the East Erie Turners, is “We Gotta Bingo’, an audience participation event with dinner, full bar, and live music. The show will run every weekend in October. Also on the schedule will be “Christmas Belles”, a comedy, in November. Playing throughout December and New Year’s weekend will be Irving Berlin’s “White Christmas”. You can place ticket orders at the box office, by phone, (814-454-2852), or on line at http://www.erieplayhouse.org .
