Last month, I had a great time at the Spirit Quest Film Festival. Since Erie doesn’t have a movie theater that regularly shows independent films, documentaries, shorts, etc., film festivals are definitely a welcome change.
As with the past five years, Greg Ropp’s Eerie Horror Film Festival, held at Erie’s historic (not to mention recently revamped) Warner Theater has tons to offer fans of the science fiction, horror, and suspense films… and what better place to have an eerie festival than Erie, PA – and in October? Perfection!
The Eerie Horror Film Festival is also known for getting some names to attend. If I’m not mistaken, past celebrities have included Adrienne Barbeau (anyone out there old enough to remember the sitcom Maude?), Jason Mewes, Dee Wallace Stone, and John Hancock, just to name a few. This year, guests include Corey Feldman, among others.
Even if you’re not particularly a fan of horror films, there still might be something of interest to you at the film festival. In addition to film screenings, the Eerie Horror Film Festival also has a Seminar Series, which is set to include programs by a ghost hunter, a Big Foot investigator, and a paranormal pastor, as well as a screenwriting workshop.
And don’t forget the Eerie Horror Festival’s “Carnival of Carnage” (that’s Horror Festival speak for souvenir shopping). While you might not be a fan of horror films, perhaps you know someone who is… and you know, that gift-giving season is right around the corner.
I’ll admit that the horror genre isn’t usually my cup of tea, but I have enjoyed a few over the years – the original Halloween, some Stephen King, The Exorcist, and some Twilight Zone/Night Stalker/Trilogy of Terror type fare. However, fellow ErieBlogs columnist, M.V. Moorhead, is quite the guru of the gruesome and has attended the film festival several times, even though he resides in Arizona. If I’m not mistaken, he’ll be in town for this year’s event, although I’m not sure how much time he’s going to have available for film festival frequenting.
Even though horror films aren’t necessarily my bag, I have to say that the titles of some of the movies sound rather intriguing. Check out the list of movies yourself and see if there’s anything that piques your interest. You never know. I admit, I let out a little “ooooh” when I saw The Tell Tale Heart on the list.
I believe the Eerie Horror Film Festival has been very successful in the past… otherwise it wouldn’t continue, right? So, even though it may not necessarily be up my alley, or maybe even yours, it just goes to show that there’s something in Erie for everyone.
