I was lucky enough to win a 2009 Creative Spark award from the Advertising Federation of Northwest PA, and the ceremony was this past Friday night at the Sheraton on the bayfront. First – I haven’t really been down there to the Sheraton or the convention center (how about a tour, convention center folks? We’ll bring our video cameras for this site!) and it’s really, really nice. Second, the ceremony in the Sheraton was great and the AdFed did a great job – thanks to people like Jen Duda and Raychel (Vendetti) Adiutori, who I finally got to meet after watching her on TV and being Facebook friends with. You know what else was cool – talking to a bunch of people who read this site every morning and really like it. That’s such awesome encouragement to keep going. We’ve got some great writers on board, some interns ramping up, we’re selling a bit of advertising – we’re crushing it and it’s all thanks to your support. So, thanks.
Jim Martin in the ETN reports that over 500 people have applied for GE Transportation’s early retirement program. That’s good news, as it will help keep more regular employees in their jobs. GE recently announced that over 1,400 workers would be let go.
Erie’s Shriners Hospital was kept open by the national Shriners’ group, but the local hospital may be shifting some of its in-patient care to Hamot Hospital. A decision may come in November as to what the hospitals will do. The Shriner’s Hospital administration issued this statement to WSEE/WICU:
In an ongoing effort to enhance pediatric medical services in Erie, Shriners Hospitals for Children has been working with other local and regional health care providers to discuss ways to broaden the delivery of pediatric care in a cost-effective and efficient manner. These discussions remain preliminary but are aimed at expanding, not reducing, pediatric medical care in the community.
Ed Palattella and Lisa Thompson had an interesting story in yesterday’s paper about the Millcreek Township School District and a federal investigation about special education program funding.
Here’s a tip. Don’t bring your gun to the casino. And if do, don’t leave it sitting by the slot machine. A 78-year-old Ohio man was arrested for doing just that this weekend. First, why is he carrying a firearm to the casino? Second, why did he leave it on a seat in front of a one-arm bandit? Penny slots = stunned.

Steve Tarasuk’s second goal of the game with 1:07 left in overtime proved to be the dagger for the Erie Otters in a 5-4 loss to the London Knights in front of a sellout crowd of 5,601 at Tullio Arena Saturday night. The crowd was the largest for a home opener in Otters history, breaking a seven year-old record when the Otters drew 5,580 for the 2002 OHL Championship banner raising ceremony. The crowd tied for the third-largest in Otters history.

Congrats on your award –
Don't expect a tour of the convention center anytime soon.
they had a chance to do that with some execs from all over the world who were in Erie and instead of giving them the tour – they charged them for the use of the hall. It could have been the PR hit of the year and booked the place solid.
Intelligence – none there that I can see. Dumb.
Oh yea, this is Erie, I forgot.
Congrats, Mike!
Inkedup, that's a really stupid idea. That building is going to lose enough taxpayer dollars over the course of its use, donating usage to a for-profit corporation hosting guests from all over the world who otherwise wouldn't visit here makes no sense.
It was a photo op with CEO's from around the world – they had one photo to take and the center wanted to charge them for the time and the room.
It would have made more sense to take a group of CEO's from many companies around the world to give them a tour of the convention center to show off what they could do for all these CEO's companies and to pitch a chance to host their conventions –
It would have been a 15 minute photo op – and a great way to showcase the facility – instead they wanted thousands of dollars to use the room for 15 minutes.
Now you tell me which was dumb. By the way – no photo was taken in the convention center.
See you think like people in Erie – Stick them for the quick buck and forget the chance to get the gold ring later.
