Ruben Swift, 35, pleaded no contest on charges of raping a child. He will be sentenced in January. Swift ran for mayor of the city of Erie in ’05.
Dan Onorato (D), Allegheny County Executive, is scheduled to appear in Erie. He announced his candidacy for governor yesterday in Pittsburgh and is touring the state.
Erie County Council gave $462,000 of restricted funds to Millcreek ($62k for a police officer) and the rest for fire equipment at Belle Valley. Unrestricted funds are earmarked to be used to help balance the County’s budget, not given to local governments, arts and other agencies.
The Erie Redevelopment Authority has been awarded a federal grant to help reduce the amount of lead paint in homes in Erie over the next 4 years. The grant was for $4 million.
Joel at the Press and Tower is reporting that 93.9 The Wolf DJ Aimee The Outlaw has left the station. Some people may be concerned, but we barely listen to the radio at all and haven’t listened to 93.9 since it was The Planet back in the day. Thank Goodness for iPods and iPhones/Blackberrys with Pandora, Slacker and Last.fm.
The Gem City Concert Band is once again recruiting for new members for the fall. There are no auditions or age restrictions, but musicians should be proficient with high school and college level literature. Rehearsals are held Tuesday evenings from 8:00 to 9:30 pm at St. John’s Lutheran Church at 23rd and Peach Streets. We are especially in need of percussion, oboe and bassoon, but all wind ensemble instruments are welcome. More info is available here.

The Mercyhurst College women’s volleyball team improved to 14-5 on the year with a 3-0 whitewashing of Lake Erie College. The Lakers took down The Storm 25-11, 25-21, 25-15 as 13 different players recorded kills in a very balanced offensive scheme.
The Edinboro University women’s soccer picked up their fifth tie of the season with a 1-1 result at Clarion.
