I spent about 15 hours (seriously) this weekend outside replacing a storm door and putting in a new screen door. It was a comedy of fails. I can’t feel my toes, so I’m going to be brief today.

A police chase this weekend turned semisweet when the vehicle being pursued by police crashed into the Pulakos store on E. 26th Street. The driver was arrested (did we mention the car was stolen?) There’s a better joke here somewhere, help me.

Pennsylvania State Police and enforcement officers from the Public Utility Commission placed 100 trucks out of service and issued 451 traffic citations during an Oct. 7 enforcement effort focusing on commercial vehicles that transport hazardous materials, State Police Commissioner Frank E. Pawlowski reported today. Troop E (Crawford, Erie, Venango and Warren counties) inspected 36 vehicles: eight vehicles placed out of service and 20 citations issued.
Enrollment at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, now stands at 4,767 students for the fall 2009 semester, a new record and a 2.9 percent increase over the previous record set in fall 2008. Penn State Behrend serves 4,400 students in resident instruction programs, according to official student census figures released by the University on Oct. 15. Of these, 4,031 are registered as full time and 369 as part time.

J.J. Crew’s goal with less than nine minutes remaining in the third period capped off a furious comeback for Western Michigan, as the Broncos rallied from a 2-0 deficit to defeat the Mercyhurst College men’s hockey, 4-3, on Saturday evening at Lawson Center Arena.

Environmental activist, physicist and philosopher Vandana Shiva will present “Soil Not Oil: Food Security in a Time of Climate Change” on Monday, Oct. 26 at 6 p.m. in Shafer Auditorium on the Allegheny College campus. The presentation, which is free and open to the public, is part of Allegheny’s Year of Social Change, a series of activities, workshops and events aimed at inspiring the campus and community to seek a more just and equitable world.
The Erie Otters and the YMCA of Greater Erie are partnering up to raise awareness about breast cancer. Otters players will run on pink treadmills at the Eastside YMCA branch Wednesday, October 21 from noon to 2 p.m. in an effort to raise money for breast cancer research.
