Robert Eugene Cheney of Las Vegas was tried in Erie and was found guilty to charges he duped people out of money by claiming to be a Cherokee Indian chief. He’ll spend the next five years in the big house wigwam.

We were sad to hear McDowell teacher Michael Malthaner was not named the PA Teacher of the Year. Bummer. We were pulling for you, and not just because I’m a McDowell alum.

The National Cancer Institute has pledged over $2 million towards research supporting the Kanzius cancer treatment. The money is going to several hospitals, including the one where Dr. Steven Curley works. He’s been doing studies on the treatment for several years. Human trials may begin in two to three years.

A few days after we blogged it, JET a story on their newscast tonight about the new construction on W. 26 at Zuck and Caughey. As our awesome commenters said, a new McDonalds is going in right across from the old one. The 26th and Caughey construction is a middle eastern restaurant, Bistro 26, and not a Hungry Howie’s pizza as one commenter said. If you are the owner of this “Bistro 26,” email me and we’ll give you some great publicity. You know what, this goes for any local restaurant – email us and let us help you get more customers.

St. Vicent is reporting a $2 million surplus for the most recent fiscal year. They had revenues of $310 million.

To keep visitors coming to Pennsylvania by the millions, Governor Edward G. Rendell today announced the commonwealth has invested $8 million to help local and regional organizations market tourism attractions and promote the unique experiences available in the State of Independence. Locally, Pennsylvania’s Great Lakes Region received $150,000 for groups in Crawford, Erie, Mercer and Venango counties.

The Max and Erma’s restaurant chain has filed for bankrupcy. The Erie location should remain open through the process. I think I’ve been there like one time. Do you go there a lot?

Sports

The Otters’ second annual Hockey for the Hungry Night is Wednesday, and fans have plenty of time to donate a non-perishable food item to Hungry Howie’s Pizza, Chiropractic Fitness or the Otters Office at Tullio Arena. It’s also Buck Night with dollar hot dogs, popcorn and beverages.

The Mercyhurst men’s soccer team, on the same day it clinched the PSAC West regular season title, earned the No. 3 ranking in the Atlantic Region poll, as released by the NCAA Division II Men’s Soccer Committee. The Lakers have gone 14-4 this season, with one game remaining, Oct. 30 at Lake Erie.

The Edinboro volleyball team won in three games against Lake Erie on Tuesday evening in its final non-conference match before finishing the regular season with four key PSAC West matches. 1. I love Max and Erma's. We go there more often then most other chain restaurants. They are very family friendly (we have 2 little ones) and the food is always great. I'd recommend the Steak with Cactus butter, or the buffalo chicken sandwich. As much business as we give them I'm surprised they are going bankrupt.
