Erie PA News, Sports and Events for Monday, November 2, 2009

Hopefully, you remembered to set your clocks back an hour yesterday. The only good thing to come out of this is the fact my kids went to bed an hour early last night.

Welcome to our new look. This new layout is more organized, easier to navigate and easier to read. We’re biased, but we think it’s now the nicest looking and easiest to navigate news site in Erie. Everyone else = stunned.

We hope you had a happy halloween weekend. We were in the grocery store at about noon on Friday and all the candy was already on clearance and the holiday displays were going up. If you hear a store that’s already playing holiday tunes, let us know. We’ll send them some coal.

Tomorrow is election day. There are some important races this year, such as Erie County Executive, Erie mayor and Millcreek Township supervisor.

Ed Palattella continues his streak of great reporting with his look this past weekend about public dissatisfaction with the City of Erie police department. If you live in the city of Erie, we’re very interested to hear what you feel about the police in the area.

The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review writes that our school taxes may be skyrocketing in 2012 and 2013. That money won’t go to build schools, instead to pay for pensions increased by the state legislature in 2001. Geez, thanks. A snip from the story:

“I was in the Erie area the other day, and one school district there calculated they would have to raise taxes 14 mills on top of their 48-mill taxes to cover it. That’s a 25 percent property tax hike just to cover retirement costs. I don’t think the property owners will stand for it. Something absolutely has to happen,” Himes said.

Millcreek parents are upset when their students reported that their school bus driver went to the Target parking lot to do donuts instead of taking them home. While we can understand why they’re angry, personally, we think that sounds like the coolest bus driver ever. Now, if they had decided to ghost ride the whip, this story would have been completely epic.

Mercyhurst College has unveiled the new Hirtzel Human Anatomy and Forensic Anthropology Laboratory, a $1.2 million mega-lab at North East that will provide an unprecedented learning opportunity for the college’s science and nursing students while taking its place among the best-equipped and staffed forensic labs in the country.

On a Saturday night when Michal Jordan was a slam dunk for the Plymouth Whalers, a last-ditch comeback attempt by the hometown Otters fell just short and the visitors prevailed 4-3 in their Ontario Hockey League contest at Tullio Arena.

The Mercyhurst College men’s hockey team scored a season-high six goals as the Lakers thumped Atlantic Hockey foe Bentley, 6-2, on Saturday evening at the Ryan Skating Arena.

Great new Iphone friendly version. You should sell this formatting to other major local family owned print media companies!

    I love the new layout!
I’m a city resident, and I appreciate the fine work of our police officers. On halloween night while I was standing outside a cruiser or a motorcycle went by every 5-10 minutes.
