Erie PA News, Sports and Events for Thursday, November 19, 2009

 11-08-09 002

We certainly are enjoying some great fall weather so far.  It’s hard to believe Thanksgiving is only a week away.  We can’t wait!

Erie County Employees received the “Erie Walks” trophy from previous champ Gannon U. in a ceremony Wednesday at the Erie County Courthouse.  The goal of the Erie Walks! program is to engage employees in fun, fitness and friendly competition – with downtown Erie as their playground. The walk participants included the City of Erie, County of Erie, Gannon and Hamot employees.

The sick individual responsible for the vandalism and theft of items taken from the grave of Corporal Timothy Lauer,  who was killed in Iraq, now has a price on his head.  A reward fund has been set up for information leading to his arrest.  We are still shocked that there are those among us who would stoop so low.   Hopefully the vandal will be identified soon.   Please contact Pa. State Police in Meadville with any information.

Longtime Airport Authority Lou Porreco has resigned his seat with a month left in his term.

We understand that the Flagship Niagara is once again on the cutting board in Harrisburg.   The  Captain and three full time crew members are to be laid off as of Friday.  We sincerely hope that funds can be restored before next summer sails around.

Various departments in the Erie County Courthouse will have to make do with fewer workers due to the budget cuts made by County Council members.  20 jobs were cut, along with a .6 mil tax increase.  Times just don’t get any easier, do they?

Sports

We’re not sure if any Buffalo fans will be unhappy that Coach Dick Jauron has been fired after running up a dismal won/lost record.  He is being replaced by Defensive Coordinator Perry Fewell for the remaining six games of the season.   Let’s hope the guy can help the Bills produce a few wins!

The Erie Otters will team up with the Central Blood Bank to sponsor the first annual Give Blood, Play Hockey Blood Drive on Tuesday, December 1, and Wednesday, December 2, from 1:oo pm to 7:00 pm in the corporate suites at Tullio Arena.

The Erie SeaWolves are proud to announce that once again, they will partner with the United States Marine Corps for the second annual “FILL A TRUCK AT THE UHT” Toys for Tots event to Jerry Uht Park! On Saturday, December 12 from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m., the main plaza in front of the Jerry Uht Park front gates will serve as a Toys for Tots drop-off.

  1. The Community Blood Bank of NW PA is NOT affiliated with the upcoming Otters blood drive. The Central Blood Bank of Pittsburgh, our direct competitor is holding it.
