The Erie Philharmonic’s conductor and music director Daniel Meyer has been contracted to stay on board for another four years. He says his top priorities are the financial situation of the Phil, and outreach programs.

In the post-Extreme Makeover Home Edition buzz, the Maleno Family (the construction group which built the Makeover house) set up the Maleno Family to Family Fund in conjunction with the Erie Community Foundation and Saint Martin Center. This fund is being used to change lives by making over local homes; the Maleno Family hopes to renovate one home every four months. In a special drive which occurred while the Erie Extreme Makeover episode aired, the Maleno Family to Family Fund has already raised over $16,000. Major props to the Malenos for helping others and improving the community.

A $500,000 state grant will help provide funding for the late John Kanzius’s cancer fighting device. The money will be used to develop a full-sized scanning bed for the device, which treats cancer cells in humans with radio waves. The bed should be completed in 8-12 months in hopes that human trials will soon be underway.
