Erie PA News, Sports and Events for Thursday, January 7, 2010

We normally don’t cover police news on Erie Blogs, but it was such a sad situation, that only 6 days into the new year, a feud between two young men, one 19 and the other 17, resulted in the death of the 19 year old, and the younger man being held on murder charges.  What disagreement is worth taking one young life, and ruining the other?  Me=sad…

It looks like table games are a pretty safe bet for Pennsylvania, with the bill having been approved by the State Senate and en route to the governor for his stamp of approval.   Rendell has already indicated he would sign the bill.  If one looks at the way the gambling dollars have dropped at the Presque Isle Casino, it seems like a very shaky way to finance state operations.

The Dairy Complex building at the Crawford County Fairgrounds has collapsed, we presume from the weight of the snow that has fallen over the past few days.  The facility, which opened in 2008, cost almost $470,000 to build.  I wonder if any of the engineers even considered our winters when designing the structure.   It would seem to me that someone would have some explaining to do.

A blood drive conducted by the Community Blood Bank, in honor of Jim Thompson, newly chosen Chairman of Erie City Council who is undergoing treatment for a form of cancer, was held at City Hall yesterday.  At least 70 units of blood was collected during the day.

Erie Blogs wishes a belated Happy Anniversary to former President George H.W. and First Lady Barbara Bush.

The towing and snowplowing business owners have to be very happy with the wintry weather.  When it isn’t snowing, they aren’t making much money.

The gas stations, however, must be making a lot these days.  Here in Erie, the average cost per gallon has increased to $2.79, a 10 cent increase.  Gotta wonder how that can be justified.  Wallets=Empty…

The ban on cell phone usage while driving is now in effect.  For everyone, that is, except for public safety workers, who will be exempt.  At first reading, the dastardly act was said to be a secondary offense, for which you could not be charged except when stopped for  a primary offense .  The word now is that may not be true.  We would be careful for awhile until the details are clear.

Congratulations are in order for the Erie Playhouse team, who raised roughly $15,000 in donations for the Kanzius Cancer Research Fund.  The Playhouse collected the money through a voluntary donation at all of the performances of ‘White Christmas, the Musical’ , which ran through December and into January.

Surprise!  Looks like we may get a little snow today and tomorrow.  The forecast is for another 6 inches or so.  I, for one, am ready for spring.  How about you?

The 2010 Gannon Athletics Hall of Fame Inductees will be honored at halftime of Saturday’s Gannon-Bloomsburg men’s basketball game.  The 2010 inductees include former women’s basketball standout Mary Kay Lynch Poppe; former men’s soccer coaching great Rob Russo; former men’s soccer standout Gerry Vandemerwe; former men’s soccer standout and current Gannon head men’s soccer coach Rob van Rheenen; and former men’s basketball standout Harold “Butch” Warner.  The entire 1986-87 Mens’ basketball team will also be inducted into the Hall of Fame.
