Erie, PA – News, Events & Sports for Wednesday, May 12, 2010

NEWS

A reader sent me a link to an article at WTOP.com about cities where people have the best outlook on life.  The good news:  Erie, PA was mentioned.  The bad news:  Erie, PA was mentioned as one of lowest-scoring cities – #170 out of 185.

Within cities, Gallup says those with the greatest well-being scores have the highest high-school graduation rates, lower crime rates, robust “opportunities for learning new things,” strong workplace partnerships and low obesity.

Check out the entire Well-Being Report.

According to ErieAlerts, the Erie Police answered a call for shots fired in the 12o0 block of West 21st Street late yesterday afternoon.  Several minutes later, officers had suspects in custody in the area of West 18th & Sassafras Streets.  Other gun-related entries on ErieAlerts included an armed robbery at the Kwik Fill at 921 East 26th Street, a report of shots fired in the 400 block of Lighthouse Street, a report of shots fired around the 200 block of West 20th Street, and a report of a firearm stolen out of a car.  With some of the “shots fired” calls, I’m wondering if perhaps people are hearing noises they don’t understand and jumping to the conclusion that they’re gunshots.  Not that I necessarily blame them.  People are getting a little jumpy.

And speaking of Lake Erie, there are reports out of Cleveland, OH of a recent UFO sighting over Lake Erie.  Some are speculating the extraterrestrial visit might have something to do with the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

This video won’t embed.  So just click over and watch it.

This video, on the other hand, behaved nicely and embedded properly, like a video should.

In the Sestak v. Specter primary race, a third poll has Sestak with a slight lead.  Unless something major happens in the next week, it looks like it’s going to be close.  There seems to be a very real possibility that Mr. Magic Bullet could lose.
