Grammy Award-winning singer and songwriter Angélique Kidjo will perform on Saturday, Sept. 25 at 8 p.m. in Shafer Auditorium on the Allegheny College campus.
Hailed as “Africa’s premier diva” by Time magazine, Kidjo is a native of Benin. Her music is known for soulful, uplifting melodies that combine elements of R&B, funk and jazz with African, European and Latin American influences.
In 2007, Kidjo’s album “Djin Djin” won the Grammy Award for best contemporary world music album and the NAACP Image Award for outstanding world music album. Her career also has included collaborations with Alicia Keys, Carlos Santana, Josh Groban, Dave Matthews and John Legend, among others.
An accomplished philanthropist, Kidjo has served as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador since 2002, traveling to Haiti and many African countries. She also founded the Batonga Foundation, which supports the education of girls in Africa by granting scholarships, building schools and developing mentoring programs.
