Very sad news… the male polar bear at the Erie Zoo has died.  The cause of death was a tear in the abdominal wall.  Norton, who was 23, was on loan to the Erie Zoo as a companion for the female polar bear, Patches.

Down in Gainesville, Florida, some preacherdude by the name of Terry Jones is planning a lovely little gathering.  He’s spearheading a good ol’ fashioned book burning… except it will include only one book:  The Quran/Koran/Qur’an.  There’s no local twist to this story.  I’m including it just for the sake of a lovely example of irony.  You see, the “Reverend” Terry Jones is the head of the Dove World Outreach Center.  And he reaches out to the adherents of the second most popular religion in the world by burning their scriptures.  Funny, no?

After 14 years in the minor leagues including several in Erie, former Seawolf Max St. Pierre finally made it to THE SHOW last week. The Detroit Tigers called up the 30 year old catcher from AAA Toledo as major league teams (plus the Pirates) expanded their rosters to 40 players on September 1st. Tigers manager Jim Leyland, a former catcher in the Detroit system, assured fans that St. Pierre would play. Last Saturday, St. Pierre started behind the plate for the Tigers and even
cracked his first major league hit
.

Way to go Max. Just don’t pull a Jim Craig and say the low point in your career was being sent to Erie.

St. Pierre’s teammate Johnny Damon played a little prank on Max and his family after Max’s first major league hit.
