Erie News and Events for August 24, 2005

A small pipe bomb was found never Roosevelt Middle School, by the fence near Ainsworth Field. It could have been there for weeks as grass was growing around it. The Erie Bomb Squad detonated the device. Weird.

Richard DeKaser, the chief economist for National City Corporation in Cleveland, studied 299 US housing markets using a ratio of home prices to household incomes. The Erie market came out being, in his opinion, overvalued by 6 percent. I see his point but I disagree. (I’m a real estate agent for those of you who didn’t know.) The average selling price has risen in the past year but I think it’s because more higher priced homes are changing hands. I live in the city in a middle class neighborhood and my neighbors - to the left, right and across the street have all been in their homes for 40 years. Nobody will hold on to a bayfront condo for 40 years. Plus the news homes being built are larger and more expensive than existing homes.

Students at Gannon University begin classes today.

Emergycare, the Erie area ambulance service, is conducting a membership drive. Mabye they’ll now be able to afford to get their web site re-done. There has been an ‘under construction’ notice on their site for 4 months.

Richardson previously worked as an environmental lab technician at the International Paper plant in Erie PA until it shut down in 2002. Richardson qualified for federal Trade Adjustment Assistance. He decided to enroll at Edinboro University to become an elementary school teacher.

A task force met yesterday to figure out ways to increase minority representation in the Erie Fire Department.

Rebecca Nick-Dart will complete a one-year pharmacy practice residency at St Vincent Health Center in Erie. Nick-Dart received her BS in Chemistry from Gannon University and a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the Shenandoah University Bernard J Dunn School of Pharmacy in Winchester, Va.

The new Mercyhurst College athletics site went live yesterday.

I completely agree about the housing market in Erie. As someone who's familiar w/ the area and who has bought a house within the last 15 months, I have to say that most of the places we looked at were spot-on. The house we bought was definitely undervalued, one reason we snatched it up. The sellers had an inheritance abroad to claim and needed out fast.

Compared to the area in Colorado where we spent a year, Erie is a downright bargain no matter where you look.
