Erie PA News and Events for Sunday August 21, 2005

In a stunning development, the stories and articles for GoErie.com are now showing up on Google News. They’ve been showing up for a week now so it doesn’t seem to be a fluke.
When Google set up their news reader, there were only four out of around 10,000 news sources that opted out of haveing their results show up on Google News. The Erie newspaper was one of the four. It never made sense to me. More readers means more advertising revenue. That’s newspaper 101. And when 75-90 percent of online visitors find their info from search engines, they were losing out big time.
GECAC announced that the Honorable Tom Ridge will be speaking at GECAC’s 35th Annual Dinner which will be held in September.
Tickets will go on sale Monday, August 22 at the Gannon University Carneval Athletic Pavilion on 3rd and Peach Streets for the Gannon-Mercyhurst football game scheduled for Saturday, August 27 at Gannon University Field. Tickets will be available Monday through Thursday between 8:30 am and 4 p.m. and Friday from 8:30 am to noon. NO PHONE ORDERS OR CREDIT CARDS WILL BE ACCEPTED. Tickets are scaled at $5 for adults and $3 for students and senior citizens. All tickets are general admission and seating will be on a first-come, first-served basis. The game will sellout and I’m guessing by Wednesday.
Jackie Webb and Friends will perform Monday August 22 at 7 pm at Nate Levy Park as part of the City of Erie free concert series, Music Everywhere.
Ron Yarosz and the Musical Expansion, Glenn Pavone and the Cyclones, and Jakes Blues will wrap up the 2005 Port Erie Concert series 8 Great Tuesdays this Tuesday at 6:30 pm at the Liberty Park Pepsi Amphitheater.
Eliezer Alfonzo hit a grand slam in the sixth inning as Norwich beat the visiting Erie SaeWolves 11-1.
The Erie District Golf Association (EDGA) Amateur Championship is taking place this weekend. Ellery Tarbell and Tom Phalin are tied after the second round.
Hamot Health Foundation, the Erie Runners Club and the city of Erie present the 2005 Hamot 10K/Mayor’s Cup. In addition to the competitive 10K and 5K event, the day’s activities also include a Toddler Trot for kids ages two to eight. The 10K starts at 8 am, the 5K at 8:15, and the Toddler Trot at 9:30.
I saw a funny item in the PPG. Gannon University student Bobby Cherry of Moon, PA saw the personalized plate ‘HREWEGO’ in Erie. It was mounted on a Steelers plate holder.
Pittsburgh 17, Miami 3
Lake Erie Speedway canceled Friday’s racing program due to adverse weather conditions. Heavy thunderstorms rolled through North East, PA at around 5:30 pm, which soaked the racing surface. With a tornado warning in effect for the area until 10:00 pm, and the chance for more severe weather officials decided to pull the plug. A reschedule date for the race and the schedule appearances by Sterling Marlin, Casey Mears, Greg Biffle, and Bobby Labonte will be decided shortly and will be published on the LES website. Fans with tickets are encouraged to hang on to their ticket stubs and autograph session wristbands for the reschedule date.

Dennis: Did you see the article in today's Erie Times about the Mercyhurst cover-up?

It's nice that the Times is in Google, but they should still get rid of the ridiculous user registration system they've had for awhile now. Thankfully, there's BugMeNot.com.

The whole Erie Times News boycott never made sense to me either. It always seemed to be a logical (or illogical) extension of small town Erie behavior --cloistered, closed off to outsiders, etc. I think the Erie Times is going through a good change, however slow. However, right now I believe them to be very susceptible to a competing Internet news medium.

Great BLOG.
One correction: in several mentions on your BLOG of GECAC you have had an incorrect or broken link for the agency's URL.
The correct URL for GECAC is www.gecac.org.
Thanks.
FYI.
