Erie PA news and Events for Tuesday August 30, 2005
WJET-TV reported that MTR Gaming will most likely build Presque Isle Downs racetrack and slots only casino in Summit Township and that ground breaking will be in late September. Recently I’ve noticed quite a few people looking to buy or sell property in that area of Summit. We have a listing about 2 miles away at 8771 Perry Highway that would be great of a track manager or a veterinarian.

Since 1920, the Pennsylvania Game Commission has been acquiring State Game Lands by using revenues generated from hunting and furtaking license sales; timber, coal, oil, gas and mineral sales from State Game Lands; and the state’s share of a federal excise tax on sporting arms and ammunition. The Game Commission makes in-lieu-of-tax payments this time of year of $1.20 for each acre it owns, and it owns a lot of land. The payments are divided equally between the county, school districts and municipalities. Here are a few examples: In Erie County they own 16,401.71 acres and are making a payment of $19,682.05; Crawford County, 26,028.89 acres, $31,234.67; and Warren County, 37,423.21 acres, $44,907.84.
(Furtaking? You might not want to play Scrabble with whoever wrote that press release.)
The Oil City Derrick reported that Rev John Neff, priest at Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church and St Venantius Church in Rouseville, has been assigned to St Luke Church in Youngsville, PA. Msgr John Swoger, pastor of St Joseph Church, will now give Saturday masses at Assumption. If you’re a Catholic priest, you have pretty good job security. Most priests take care of 2-4 churches because of the shortage os priests.
There is a fascinating story in the Lebanon Daily News about Edinboro University freshman Amanda Ebersole. Years ago Ebersole sprained her ankle. She developed Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy Syndrome (RSDS) and is now in a wheelchair. With an injury such as a ankle sprain the brain sends signals to the area which swells the tissue and causes pain. But with RSDS the signals never stop and actually spread throughout the body.
For decades Edinboro has been a leader in higher education for the disabled. The school seeks out people in wheelchairs. Over 400 of the 8,000 students at the school use wheelchairs. Every student benefits. When an Edinboro grad sees someone in a wheelchair, they don’t think it’s unusual. They wonder if they recognize that person from school.
A recent joint sweep by the Pennsylvania Board of Probation and Parole (PBPP), the Erie offices of the US Marshals Service and the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) resulted in the arrests of seven absconders - parolees who were not reporting. The operation, which was organized and executed by 10 state parole agents, one US Marshal and one ATF agent, targeted 22 absconders with Erie County addresses that were not reporting with law enforcement officials. Five of those arrested were for state violations while two were wanted on federal charges. A complete listing of offenders in absconder status, including brief descriptions and photos, may be viewed by logging on to the PBPP Web site.
US Senator Rick Santorum delivered more than $3.7 million of federal funding and announced another $1.7 million of federal funding he secured for northwestern Pennsylvania. Millcreek Township received $250,000 from the Environmental Protection Agency for construction of the Millcreek Township storm sewer pipe. This expected to help prepare for the Tom Ridge Field runway extension project at the Erie International Airport. The Senator also delivered $500,000 of federal funding for a ramp-widening project at the congested Summit Township intersection of Interstate 90 and Peach Street. Santorum also announced $200,000 he included in the Senate Transportation Appropriations bill for the acquisition of an abandoned brownfield site in Corry. It is expected that the Corry Downtown Reuse Project will redevelop the site and use it to bring more than 100 new manufacturing jobs to the city. $1 million went to the Warren Area Transit Authority for the Warren Intermodal Transit Facility at Breeze Point Landing; $1 million to PENNDOT for the design, construction, and rehabilitation of six bridges along State Route 6 in Warren County; and $1,000,000 for the Crawford County Intermodal Transportation Facility.
The 2005 Erie County (Pennsylvania) Fair continues today and runs all week through September 3. Admission price is $6 which includes rides. The fairgrounds are located on Route 8, Wattsburg Road, about 15 miles outside of Erie.
Jr’s on the Bay (no web site) will host this Thursday nights block party in their parking lot off the bayfront with street tents, outdoor cafes, celebrity bartenders and live music. The party runs from 6 pm to 11 pm.
