Groundbreaking for the Erie Bayfront Convention Center will take place this morning. The convention center is slated to open in 2007.

CJ DeGennaro has cerebral palsy and gets around by using a wheelchair. DeGennaro will be an incoming freshman at Edinboro University when school starts in a couple of weeks. For his Lincoln High School senior project CJ raised money for the McGuire Memorial Foundation, a school in Daugherty Township PA for mentally and physically disabled children, by placing piggy banks at 12 area businesses and took donations at school football and basketball games. He raised $1,300. The banks and its contents sold for $2,400 at an auction.

The Purple Martin Conservation Association, which is headquartered in Edinboro PA, posts rough coordinates of 300 potential roosting sites around the country. They gather by the thousands at this time of the year before they leave for South America. See this page for roost info.
Prep work for Celebrate Erie begins today. Be warned that parking will be a little tight in the downtown Erie PA area.


On August 20, 2004, Shayna Stefanik was tragically killed in a car accident traveling from Pittsburgh to Erie while on I-79. Shayna had recently graduated from Mercyhurst Prep. A dance to celebrate Shayna’s life will be held at the West View Firemans Banquet Hall, 398 Perry Highway, on Friday, August 19, 2005, 7-11pm. Tickets are $25 each and include beverages and food. All funds raised will be used to establish a scholarship in her honor to be given to a deserving dance student at Point Park College. There will also be a service in memory of Shayna on Saturday, August 20th, 2005. The service will be held at Presque Isle State Park, Beach 6, Erie PA at 7:30 pm. It will be immediately followed by a Shayna memory video and refreshments at Mercyhurst Prep, 538 East Grandview Blvd. Donations will be accepted and will be used for a scholarship fund at Mercyhurst Prep in Shayna’s name. Great Lakes Hospice is looking for committed volunteers. They will be holding a two-day training session on August 15 and 16, from 9 am to 5 pm. at their offices at 1700 Peach Street, Suite 244. The training is free and lunch will be provided. If you would like to learn more about hospice volunteering or would like to attend the training session, please contact Barbara Warner at (814) 877-6515.

Allegheny College is holding auditions for the fall season of its College Chorus, a choral ensemble that combines Allegheny students with singers from Meadville and surrounding communities. Details about the auditions are available from Ward Jamison, Allegheny director of choral activities, at 332-3305 or by e-mail at wjamison@allegheny.edu.

Lake Erie Car Classics Club is holding their weekly Monday night antique and classic car cruise-in tonight from 6-9 pm at the Park ‘n Ride parking lot on the West Bayfront Highway.

Matt Bailie pitched a no-hitter for the Double-A Bowie Baysox on Sunday in a 5-0 win over the Erie SeaWolves. Bailie had an era of 16.20 going into the game.

David Patronik won his second straight Buffalo District Golf Association Men’s Individual Championship on Saturday. Patronik is a senior at Gannon University.
