Sonja Wolfe was murdered by her boyfriend Tracy Steele Smith. Smith reportedly confessed after his arrest. Wolfe was strangled and her body placed near the railroad tracks near Haybarger Street, a blcok from her home. I remember Sonja from when I bartended. Sweet, but troubled girl. My heart goes out to her Mother and children.

The US News and World Report released their 2006 America’s Best Colleges guide. Allegheny College was ranked 88 in the Top Liberal Arts Colleges down from 83 last year. In the Northern Universities, Masters category, Gannon University was ranked 37, Penn State-Erie, The Behrend College was 62 and Edinboro Univeristy of Pennsylvania was 129. Gannon moved up from last years 45 while Behrend remains at 62. In the Northern Comprehensive Colleges-Bachelors, Mercyhurst College was ranked 10, up from number 12 last year.


The blood shortage that has been affecting hospitals in our region continues. Blood levels are roughly 350 units lower than they should be. One unit is received each time a single donor donates blood. All donors are strongly encouraged to donate at the Community Blood Bank, 2646 Peach Street. Community Blood Bank is open from 9-6 Monday through Friday and until 7:30 pm Tuesday night and Saturday 9 am - 12:30 pm. Photo ID required.

Robert (Bob) Barrett died Thursday in Pinehurst, NC at age 89. Barrett owned the world famous Pine Crest Inn. Barrett had worked for the Erie newspaper for two decades.

Erie native Cris Groenendaal appear at the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina on August 30, where he’ll perform with his pianist wife, Sue Anderson, in a concert featuring their Broadway, cabaret and pop favorites. Groenendaal played the title role in the hit musical “The Phantom of the Opera” more than 860 times on Broadway and with international companies. He’s also had other staring roles on Broadway including “Sweeney Todd”, “Sunday in the Park with George”, and “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.” Groenendaal graduated from Allegheny College in 1970.

Adam Verona has entered St Paul Seminary in Pittsburgh. He is in his first year of pre-theology at Duquesne University. Verona has an English degree and a paralegal certification from Gannon University. He previously worked for two law firms and the Pennsylvania attorney general’s office, all in Erie.

Paul Kubiak has been named Vice President of Sales and Marketing of First National Bank (Ohio). He is responsible for branch administration and marketing. A graduate of Edinboro State College in Pennsylvania (BA Accounting), Kubiak began his career in consulting in the nuclear and steel industries. Additionally, he spent eleven years in customer service and sales management in the steel industry. He joined First National Bank, one year ago, serving as a Vice President, Commercial Banking.

CelebrateErie begins today. Festival hours are 11 am - midnight Friday and Saturday, 9 pm on Sunday. There are a million things going on, too many to mention so just go to downtown Erie and enjoy. I’ll be at a booth in front of the Renascence Center tonight from 7-9 pm and on Saturday morning and early afternoon I’ll be at Heritage Hall in the Boston Store. Look me up.

Rookie left wing David Wrigley has agreed to terms and signed a new one-year contract with the Muskegon Fury for the upcoming 2005-06 UHL campaign. Wrigley played in four regular season and 11 playoff games for Muskegon last season after his career ended at Mercyhurst College. Hurst grad Nolan Brown also plays for the Fury.

Here’s some info on the New York Islanders’ first-round pick Ryan O’Marra. Ryan is an Irish-Catholic kid who was born in Japan yet is a Canadian citizen. Ryan played in the Ontario Hockey League yet played for an Amercian team, the Erie Otters.

Lake Erie Speedway holds their Race of Champions featuring NEXTEL Cup drivers Bobby Labonte, Casey Mears, Sterling Marlin and Greg Biffle tonight. They announced that there will be private Meet and Greet passes available for NEXTEL Cup Star Sterling Marlin for $50 per pass. The pass will include a private half hour Meet and Greet with Sterling Marlin, private grandstand seating, and a picnic style buffet dinner. All people interested should contact the speedway.
