Erie PA News and Events for Saturday August 27, 2005
Northwestern Pennsylvania experienced another small plane crash, the thrid of the month. A Cessna crashed on approach of the Corry-Lawrence Municipal Airport just before 4 pm. A man from Erie died in the crash. The pilot and a teenage girl survived. I was in Corry about 90 minutes after the crash and everyone in town knew about it.

TigsTown (sub req to read most of the story) reported that the Erie SeaWolves might move to Michigan next year.
Today’s Gannon-Mercyhurst GLIAC football game at Gannon University Field has been declared a sellout. Gannon officials sold the last tickets Friday afternoon and no tickets will be available at the gate. If you didn’t get tickets you can see the game on the Image Sports Network (no web site), listen to it on WJET, or listen live with internet audio.
Allegheny College and Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio, have entered into an agreement by which Allegheny students will be given special consideration when they apply for admission to Xavier’s School of Education.
The North East, PA National Rib Festival will be held August 26-28 at Gravel Pit Park. For details call the Fuller Hose Company at 814-725-9211. There is no web site for the event.
The Polish festival Zabawa will be held August 26-28 at Holy Trinity Church, East 23rd and Reed Street in Erie, PA. The festival will feature polka music, dancing, games, raffles, Polish food courts and a bakery, and a children’s area. Admission to the festival is free. For more information call 814-456-0671 because there is no web site for the event.
Gannon University is hosting an exhibit by nationally-known illustrator Paul O Zelinsky. The exhibit will remain on display through October 3 in Gannon’s Schuster Gallery, located on the third floor of Nash Library, 619 Sassafras Street. It is free and open to the public during normal library hours of operation. The exhibit, on loan to Gannon from the National Center for Children’s Illustrated Literature in Abilene, Texas, consists of more than 50 pieces of original artwork that Zelinsky used in illustrating children’s books.
The 2005 Pennsylvania Premier Alliance League (PPA) Open Cup will be held at the host venue of Family First Sports Park August 27-28, 2005. The PPA Open Cup is for soccer players aged U9-U14 for the 2005-2006 playing season. Over 150 soccer teams are expected. Every hotel room within 50 miles of Erie is taken. Expect long lines at upper Peach Street restaurants.
The Erie Rugby Club is holding a 5K Fun Run of Saturday August 27, 2005 at 9 am at Frontier Park, West 8th St and The Bayfront Parkway. Registration will be held at 8am, the fee is $15 which includes a T-Shirt. Proceeds benefit the Erie Shriners Hospital for Children. There will be an exhibition rugby game following the race.

Harrisburg beat the Erie SeaWolves 7-4. Erie had 3 players named to the Class AA Eastern League’s postseason all-star team: infielder Don Kelly as the utility player, RPH Joel Zumaya and closer Edwin Almonte.
The Gannon men’s soccer team opened its 2005 season with a 6-1 loss at Rockhurst (Mo) Friday evening.
In women’s soccer, Bellarmine started its season with a 3-2 win over Mercyhurst College in Erie, PA. The Gannon women’s soccer team scored its lone goal midway through the second half and earned a 1-1 tie at Geneva Friday evening in the season opener for both squads.
The Detroit Red Wings have invited former Erie Otter David Herring to their prospect tournament and also their main training camp. Herring scored 5 goals and had 11 assists with 147 penalty mintes for the Erie Otters last year.
