Erie Indemnity Company (Nasdaq ERIE) reported on Wednesday its second-quarter net income rose nearly 34 percent from a year earlier and cited improved underwriting profitability. Net income for the quarter ended June 30 increased 33.7 percent to $76.2 million, or $1.10 per share, from $57.0 million, or 81 cents per share, in the year earlier period.
Lawrence C Sherman of North East, Pa died in Lynn, Mass when he was run over by a garbage truck. The driver of the trash truck was backing into Turner Trucking and Salvaging to offload when the accident occurred. Police are investigating when expect no charges to be filed.
The City of Erie’s Celebrate Erie summer festival seeks volunteers to fill various positions within the event’s Taste of Erie Beer and Wine Garden, CelebrateInnovation exhibit, Junk Jam, Merchandise Tents and event’s headquarters. Interested citizens should plan to attend the CelebrateErie Volunteer Orientation tonight, Aug 4 at 7 pm at Gannon University’s Zurn Center or call 814-870-1269. CelebrateInnovation showcases products and inventions created and manufactured right here in Erie. Volunteers are needed to assist with exhibit set-up, hands-on projects and exhibit visitor traffic control. Junk Jam is music making on a flower pot-a-phone (a marimba made out of flowerpots), giant rain sticks, and various gongs, bells and symbols created out of recycled materials by sculptor Evan Everhart and musician Kelly Armor. Volunteers are needed to assist festival visitors with playing giant musical instruments. No musical experience is necessary. A Taste of Erie will feature cuisine prepared by local chef’s. Volunteers are needed to assist with serving beer and wine from the beer and wine tent, table clean-up, and trash pick-up.
The Erie Farmers Market at Griswold Park, 14th and Peach Streets, will be open today and each Thursday during Summer from 9 am - 4:30 pm.
The Plymouth Tavern will host tonights Thursday night block party from 11th to 12th on State with street tents, outdoor cafes, celebrity bartenders and live music featuring The Earthquakers. Food and a full, cash bar will be available. Proceeds will benefit the Erie Art Museum. The party runs from 6 pm to 11 pm.
Steve Crowl and Friends play a free concert tonight in Burton Park as part of the Music Everywhere series.
The 13th Annual Erie Art Museum Blues and Jazz Festival will be held August 6 and 7, 2005 in Frontier Park at the corner of West 8 Street and the Bayfront Parkway. The free music festival is a two-day celebration of music and culture that attracts thousands annually. Bring your blanket or lawn chair and have a blast.
The Dan Rice Days Festival (no web site as Girard is 20 years behind the times) will be held August 5-6, 2005 in Girard, PA. This event commemorates the life and times of the most famous clown in history. Rice is best known as the political cartoonist Thomas Nast’s model for Uncle Sam. Call 814-774-9683.
The Erie SeaWolves beat Altoon 10-0. Preston Larrison got the win. Corey Hamman pitched the final 3 1/3 innings for his third save. Victor Mendez put one out of the park and Mike Woods hit an inside-the-park home run. Erie and Altoona play again today at Jerry Uht Park in downtown Erie. Rob Henkel will get the start for Erie.
Erie SeaWolves pitcher Justin Verlander saw a doctor about his shoulder and the verdict was - “minor posterior capsular inflammation caused by fatigue, no structural damage.” He’ll rest for two weeks.
The Erie Otters Summer Cruise In will be held Sunday, August 14th from 11 am until 3 pm at Sandy’s European Marketplace in Meadville.
