Erie PA News and Events for Friday September 2, 2005
A motorcycle ran into the back of a car near the Erie VA Medical Center on East 38th Street around 3 am this morning. The female passenger on the motorcycle is in critical condtion with a head injury. The driver of the car fled the scene. Alcohol was believed to be involed. As the police and an ambulance were at the scene, complete with flashing lights, not one but two vehicles went through baracades and one crashed into a police car. Again, alcohol was believed to be involved.
City of Erie Mayor Richard E Filippi will be joined by a number of community leaders to announce various efforts that the City of Erie is undertaking to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina. Details of those efforts will be released at the press conference today at 10 am in the City Hall Press Room.
The Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) has added two new programs. LECOM has received provisional approval from the Commonwealth Of Pennsylvania Department of Education to begin a Masters of Science in Medical Education program. The two-year graduate program will provide the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed for effective teaching, administration and leadership for those who desire advanced learning in medical education. This is LECOM’s third graduate degree program and the first Masters level course.
Penn State Behrend has installed wireless access on the campus.
The Erie Homes for Children and Adults MOVE program will be holding a car wash TODAY at EHCA’s Main Facility to benefit the American Red Cross for Katrina disaster. Please stop by to get your car wash and make a donation. The MOVE program is an adult day program for people with developmental disabilities.
Events this weekend:
* The 2005 Erie County (Pennsylvania) Fair continues today and runs all week through September 3. Admission price is $6 which includes rides. The fairgrounds are located on Route 8, Wattsburg Road, about 15 miles outside of Erie.
* The 2005 Erie PA German Heritage Festival will be held September 3-4 at St Nick’s Grove, 5131 Old French Road (Route 97). Admission is $4 with kids under 12 getting in for free.
* The Erie SeaWolves final homestand of the 2005 season starts Friday, September 2nd and ends on Monday, September 5th.
* The Mercyhurst Lakers Women’s Volleyball team puts their unblemished record on the line Friday and Saturday when they host their annual invitational.
* Numerous high school and college football games.
The Westminster Figure Skating Club of Erie will host two open houses in September to kick off its 48th season of skating. Skate for free at the JMC Ice Arena, 423 West 38th St, Erie, from 9:45 to 11:45 am on Sat, Sept 10 (ages 4 to 10) and from 6:45 to 8:15 pm on Tues, Sept 13 (ages 11 and up, including adults). Guests at the open houses can watch a performance and shop for used skates and skating clothes. New skaters can sign up for six weeks of introductory group lessons for the price of five weeks ($50). Small children just learning to skate must have a teen or adult skater helping on the ice. Skate rental is available.
The Lake Erie Arboretum at Frontier Park (LEAF) Festival is September 10 from 10am - 3pm. There will be music, children’s games and activities, tree climb, antique truck rides, environmental booths, horticultural lectures, scavenger hunt, food and more.
Josh Lustig of Erie caught 4 passes for 44 yards as William and Mary fell to Marshall University 36-24 Thursday night.
Levonne Rowan who is expected to start at cornerback in Wisconsin’s Saturday’s opener against Bowling Green. His brother, Dywon Rowan, is backup tailback for the Badgers. Both graduated from Erie Mercyhurst Prep.
The Erie Otters of the Ontario Hockey League announced today that tickets for the Otters Pre-Season Tournament September 16th and 17th at the Tullio Arena and tickets for the Otters 10th Anniversary Home Opener on September 29th are on sale now.
