On July 11, I heard that Tyler Stoczynski was transferring to Gannon and mentioned it in my blog. The rumor is now fact. Gannon University head men’s basketball coach John Reilly announced the addition of Tyler Stoczynski (Erie McDowell/UMass Lowell) to the program on Friday, bringing his 2005 recruiting class to five. Stoczynski transfers to Gannon after spending one season at Lowell. Tyler becomes the third member of the Stoczynski family to play basketball at Gannon. His father Neal (1973-76) ranks ninth all-time at Gannon in career assists (321) and 34th in scoring (881). His uncle Dave (1971-73) resides in 38th place on Gannon’s all-time scoring chart with 853 career points.
Adam Maduri’s (Oakville, Ontario/St Ignatius of Loyola) second goal of the evening four minutes and 55 seconds into overtime propelled the Gannon University men’s soccer team (2-1) past Lewis (Ill) Friday evening. Freshman Dan Howell (Erie, Pa/Iroquois) netted his first career goal in the 11th minute. The visiting Flyers were ranked 17th in the NSCAA preseason top 25.
Sophomore Kyle Jackson scored a goal at 87:25 to break a scoreless tie and lift the Mercyhurst Men’s Soccer team (1-2) to a 1-0 victory over St Joseph’s (Ind) in a non-conference battle. Laker goalkeeper Daniel Mudd also recorded his first career shutout.
The Mercyhurst Women’s Soccer team spotted Saint Joseph’s an early goal, then scored the final three tallies of the game to defeat the Pumas 3-1 Friday afternoon. The Lakers improved to 3-1 on the young season while St Joe’s dropped to 0-2.
The Mercyhurst women’s volleyball team improved its record to 6-0 Friday by defeating both Shepherd and Fairmont State in five games in the opening day of its annual invitational.
The Gannon University volleyball team (3-3) won two matches at the Mercyhurst Invitational Friday, defeating Davis and Elkins 3-0 before downing Fairmont State 3-0.
The Rome Renegades announced Friday afternoon that they will become the 14th member of the American Indoor Football League next season. The Renegades just completed their season in the NIFL.
The Erie SeaWolves have raised over $1700 to be donated to the American Red Cross to aid the relieve effort of those who lost so much due to Hurricane Katrina. Throughout the weekend the SeaWolves will have banks around Jerry Uht Park for donations. I heard a rumor that the cheap bastards that own the SeaWolves, Mandaly Sports Entertainment, is considering contributing a nickle.
