Erie PA News and Events for Sunday September 4, 2005
This riveting unsolved mystery story is by John Stark Bellamy II in the Rutland Herald. In August of 1929, the body of a young woman was found in a Vermont field. It was thought to be a suicide. Ten months later George Packard told authorities he thought it could be his wife. He identified the dead woman as Catherine Packard, his wife. Mabel Abbott, who helped raise Catherine, didn’t believe it was her, asked questions and went searching. In August of 1930 Abbott found Catherine working as a maid in New Hampshire after having spent nearly a year in Erie, PA. Her boyfriend worked at GE but later lost that job so the two of them left Erie. Catherine admitted that she had written several suicide notes. With all the publicity the case generated, Belle Chickering came forward and said it could be her daughter. Catherine Packard said she recalled a woman matching Chickering from a place she one worked and even remembered that the woman had the same colored purse as the purse found with the dead girl. Catherine Packard was later convicted of adultery and spent time in prison and her husband was granted a divorce. Catherine later married the father of her divorced husband. The story can’t be wrapped up in a nice little bow like a CSI episode because no positive identification was ever made of the body of the woman found in the field.
