Erie PA News and Events for Monday September 5, 2005

A group in Iowa has restored an 1890 era Ball stationary steam engine that was manufactured in Erie, PA. The Old Threshers Reunion spent 300 hours getting the engine in working condition. The Ball, which has a 14 inch bore and an 18 inch stroke, is estimated at 150 horsepower. The Ball engine was usually mounted on a Erie Steam Shovel Company shovel. The Erie Steam Shovel Company was the country’s leading manufacturer of small excavators. In 1927, the Bucyrus Company merged with the Erie Steam Shovel Company forming Bucyrus-Erie. The company changed their name to Bucyrus International when they pulled out of Erie in 1984.
