Erie PA News and Events for Wednesday September 7, 2005
The City of Erie’s Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs has joined with the Erie-Western PA Port Authority to host a benefit concert for the victims of Hurricane Katrina on tonight September 7, 6:30-9 pm at the Liberty Park Pepsi Amphitheater. Visitors will be asked to make a $5 donation per person upon entry to Liberty Park. All proceeds will be given to the Erie chapter of the American Red Cross. Featured bands include Erie’s Key West Express at 6:30 pm and One World Tribe at 8 pm. Gates will open at 5 pm.
The total amount raised by the Erie SeaWolves fans last weekend was $8,650.34. All monies raised this weekend will be donated to the American Red Cross. The team is owned by Mandalay Sports Entertainment. How much did the owners contribute? To my knowledge, not one cent.
The 2005 Waterford Community Fair continues today and runs through Saturday September 10. Admission is $3 per person with children 12 and under free.
Thursday, September 8 will be Nash Library Night at Jr’s Last Laugh Comedy Club and Restaurant. The club, 1402 State, will donate a portion of ticket sales from that night’s gate to the Gannon University Nash Library, which will use the money toward the purchase of books and materials. If attending, please remember to mention that you want a portion of the ticket sale earmarked for Nash Library.

The Westminster Figure Skating Club of Erie will host two open houses in September to kick off its 48th season of skating. Skate for free at the JMC Ice Arena, 423 West 38th St, Erie, from 9:45 to 11:45 am on Sat, Sept 10 (ages 4 to 10) and from 6:45 to 8:15 pm on Tues, Sept 13 (ages 11 and up, including adults). Guests at the open houses can watch a performance and shop for used skates and skating clothes. New skaters can sign up for six weeks of introductory group lessons for the price of five weeks ($50). Small children just learning to skate must have a teen or adult skater helping on the ice. Skate rental is available.
The 2005 Erie Marathon will be held September 11. The start/finish is in the Rotary Pavilion Area (approximately 3 miles from the entrance to the park) and the course will consist of two complete loops of Presque Isle State Park. This marathon is quite possibly the flattest course in the country with no major elevation changes at all, total elevation change is 12 feet. It is certainly a Boston qualifier and has a course record prime to be broken. Those who expect a marathon time of greater than 5 hours will be required to start at 6:30 am with the rest of the field starting at 7:30 am. There will also be a 4-Person Marathon Relay, a Half Marathon and a 5K.
When Jerry Uht Park opened Erie had a team in the short season New York-Penn League. The team opened a new park in 1995 and drew 181,000 for 35 home dates in the first year for an average of 5,171. Attendance rose to 187,000 the second year and to 196,000 the third.
Double-A Erie catcher Max St Pierre joined the Detroit Tigers as an extra catcher in the bullpen. He won’t be on the active roster.
The Gannon University volleyball team return to action tonight, Wednesday, September 7, when they travel to Edinboro for a non-conference match at 7:00 pm.
